How We Used To Live – Walk!
Date: Thursday, 6 September 2018.  Time: 4 pm.
To start this season’s How We Used To Live events Angela Trend has offered to be our guide on a walk exploring Old Lyndhurst and how we used to live.  See below for a description of the walk and alternative arrangements if it is raining.
Meet at the main door of St. Michael and All Angels’ church in Lyndhurst.  The walk begins outside the church looking at how the area has changed over the years.  Then there will be a short stroll down the High Street to The Bench, past the cemetery and crossing the road by the old Police station to discover the first and only attempt to build a Lyndhurst by pass.  On the way we will hear stories of racing and golf.  At the Romsey Road Angela will talk about tolls, turnpikes and the strenuous attempts villagers made to avoid them.  We shall return to the High Street and the Fox and Hounds.
If it is raining: Angela will give a tour of St. Michael and All Angels Church.  The involvement of the Pre-Raphaelites in the decoration of the church, particularly, the stained glass windows, the Frescoes, the Baptistry as well as well as stories of local personalities and their memorials.
Cost: £3 per person (payable on arrival).
Booking required by email (sasa.hall@btinternet.com) or 02380 284558, spaces will be limited.

Would you like a Silent Soldier Sillouette in Minstead?

To mark the final year of the World War One centenary, The Royal British Legion is inviting the public to take part in a movement to say ‘Thank You’ to the First World War generation who served, sacrificed, rebuilt and changed the nation. The Thank You movement is offering a variety of silhouettes to symbolise the communities that took part in WW1.

Action
The Parish Council would like to ask whether this is something you would like us to join in with and if so, is there a business or individual who might like to sponsor the cost (£250) or share in the cost. Please let us know at the usual address minsteadpc@gmail.com

The display of silhouettes will be throughout the UK and during the period from now until late 2018 when the nation will be commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Armistice, the end of WW1. The silhouettes are near life-size and can be fixed to a wall or attached to an upright post in public or private spaces. For more information about the commemoration follow the link here.

The Safe Car Wash App

During Parish Council Meetings we discuss a number of initiatives and decide which could be relevant to our parishioners. One which we feel does is the new Safe Car Wash App which addresses the problem of modern slavery.

Modern slavery is hidden in plain sight on our high streets. The National Crime Agency thinks there are tens of thousands of people being exploited in the UK, forced to work long hours, for little or no pay, and under threat of violence.

Some of those people are being exploited in hand car washes, which in recent years have sprung up across the country in their thousands.

The Safe Car Wash app has been developed to allow the general public to engage with the problem, it is a new tool that will enable the largest community intelligence gathering exercise ever attempted in the United Kingdom.

Download the free app either Apple or Google onto your smartphone and then when you are using a hand car wash, simply open the app and complete a short survey about the working conditions of the car wash.

NFU – Reporting Rural Crime

The NFU has launched a new service for farmers and the public to give information anonymously about rural crime, in partnership with the charity Crimestoppers.

The ‘Rural Crime Reporting Line’ is part of the NFU’s ongoing work to tackle the serious issues surrounding criminal behaviour on farms and in the wider countryside.

To give information call 0800 783 0137 or visit www.ruralcrimereportingline.uk to anonymously enter information about crime relating to: industrial fly-tipping, hare coursing, machinery theft, livestock theft or other criminal activity you could help them with. Click here for further information.

A huge welcome to Rev David Potterton

You are invited to meet and welcome the new vicar- Rev. David Potterton at a short service at All Saints Church, Minstead on Tuesday, 21st August 5 – 5.30 pm

Do come and bring the family!

You are also welcome at his Licensing Service at St Michael’s church Lyndhurst later at 7.30pm.

New Council Powers to fine vehicular littering

ROAD users caught littering from vehicles across the New Forest are set to face £80 fines under new council legislation. The new regulations will resolve the problem of identifying which person committed the offence. The penalty notice will now be sent to the owner of the car, van or lorry involved regardless of who was driving or littering. This change has been backed by two senior council members, Councillor Alison Hoare and Councillor Diane Andrews, who are both part of New Forest District Council’s cabinet. A working group consisting of officers from New Forest District Council, the Forestry Commission, National Park Authority, Verderers of the New Forest and Hampshire County Council is also proposed to assess the implementation of the new penalties. We understand that footage from a dash cam will be accepted as evidence from which the NFDC will be able to issue a penalty notice. Hopefully we will all subsequently benefit from a cleaner National Park.

Garden Bonfires

It is the time of year and now the hot weather has dissipated that we are likely to return to the task of burning our garden rubbish. However, please can we ask you to be considerate about when and where you have a bonfire.

It is perfectly ok to have the occasional bonfire to get rid of reasonable amounts of garden waste but please think about the time, the location and the weather conditions to minimise any unpleasant side effects and avoid upsetting your immediate neighbourhood!

Please make sure your gardener is aware of this if you have one.

For further information please see the District Council’s website about nuisance bonfires
http://www.nfdc.gov.uk/bonfires which includes advice on having bonfires, alternative methods of garden waste disposal and the circumstance under which an abatement notice may be issued!

Minstead Village Fete 2018

Despite the inclement weather the fete was a great day out and it was lovely to see so many of our local residents enjoying themselves. The tea tent is always a highlight and it didn’t disappoint having been filled with the most delicious cakes and pastries and with the back drop of live music, the setting was pretty special. Thank you to the Fete Committee, The Trusty Servant and all those who put their time in to planning and manning the other fabulous stalls. It was a resounding success.

A few images to remember the day.

NB The next big Minstead Village day out is on Saturday 1st September for the annual Flower, Fruit and Vegetable Show at the Village Hall. Definitely a visual treat.

The Parish council is being actively encouraged to develop a plan to enable those who live in the village to support the emergency services in the event of a major incident or critical emergency in, or close to, our village. These could include a serious building or heath fire, lengthy disruption to water or electricity supplies or, as recently experienced, severe weather. We could have helped those stranded on the A31.

Campers and caravans at Hazel Hill car park, Minstead

You may have seen via the Parish Council’s Facebook page that we had a group of unauthorised campers in one of our car parks during the week. It raised the issue of who the appropriate body is to report this type of incident to. The answer is The Forestry Commission and if it’s out of office hours, there is a 24 hour line 0300 067 4600.
Unfortunately our unwelcome visitors left behind some pretty unpleasant rubbish and special thanks must go to Penny Field who single-handedly cleared it up.

Minstead Parish Council Facebook page

Facebook – love it or loathe it, it does have a place for informing and sharing information quickly. We have our own Minstead Parish Council page which we use for exactly this reason. The page can be found by clicking here, just don’t forget to like and follow it to stay linked. The main hub of information will remain as a weekly e-newsletter and on the village website www.minstead.org.uk

Newtown near Fleetwater

For everyone who has been affected by the road closure at Newtown, please be assured the Parish Council has been chasing Bournemouth Water for a resolution to the problem. A leak was discovered by their engineers who then undertook the work to fix it. The same team then refilled the investigative hole and Bournemouth Water had understood it to be fixed. However locally we could see water was flowing from another lower point in the road where the tarmac had collapsed. We presume the two are connected and will continue to liaise with Bournemouth Water until the problem is completely resolved.

29th July eNewsletter

The Parish Council would like to wish Councillor Alan Ferguson, the usual author of our weekly e-newsletter, a very speedy recovery after his rather impromptu visit to the cardiac unit in Southampton. He is very keenly missed.

Minstead Village Fete Saturday 11th August

Please can you donate a prize for the Village Fete’s (Sat 11th August) raffle draw? We would be so grateful if you could and to drop these off to Councillor Steve Cattell at 2, Congleton Close, Minstead. Proceeds will be in support of the Church Tower Fund and SSAFA.

We also need your books. If you have any unwanted books the Fete’s book stall could sell, please drop these to Parish Clerk, Polly Osborne at Curtle Cottage, Lyndhurst Road, SO43 7HA. She can also arrange collection by phoning 02380 812375.

Timings – This year’s Fete will be on the Green starting at approximately midday and finishing around 4.30pm.  Proceeds will go to the Church and the Tower Fund appeal and SSAFA. If you are free to help set up that would be a great.

Please let us know at minsteadpc@gmail.com if you can lend a hand or just turn up on the day at about 9am– the more the merrier!

The Tea area will be co-ordinated by the Church and we would welcome any support you can give by way of donations of Savoury or Cake produce.

In addition we would be very pleased to hear from you if you are able to give a little time to the running of the Tea Tent between the hours of 11.30am and 4.30pm

Could you please let us know if you are able to provide food and/or your preferred times to assist on the day.

A call for more responses! Many thanks to everyone who has completed the survey, either on line or on paper but we really do need more than the hundred or so to securely gauge what you, the parishioners, would like. So, positive or negative, please let us know. Click here for the link to the questionnaire. It takes barely 5 minutes to complete and anyone can take part.  The survey is not limited to one per household, just one per person!

Hard copies have been delivered which can be taken to the Trusty Servant where there is a special box for completed surveys.  If you are unable to do this please contact our Clerk, Polly Osborne, on 023 8081 2375 and we will arrange for it to be collected.  We can also try and get another form to you if you have mislaid yours.

VERDERERS ASK YOU NOT TO PUT WATER OUT FOR ANIMALS

The Verderers’ Court has issued a notice urging people NOT to put out water in buckets or other receptacles for the animals.  Despite the best of intentions this is counter-productive.  There are plenty of places in the Forest where animals can get water including large water troughs which are mains fed and the animals know where they are.

RECYCLING STATION AT THE VILLAGE HALL

This NFDC site is for recycling bottles, cans, jars, paper, cardboard etc. in the bins that are provided and are marked with what is acceptable.
It is not a general rubbish site.
Recently a number of pieces of general rubbish, including folding chairs, a suitcase, pictures, wok, wiring, bags of cans and bottles, open box of foodstuff, and the like have been left there. Please do not do this or NFDC may close the site completely to the detriment of all those who do use it properly. (Before you say “It’s the Auction”, it was not – I’ve asked them)
