Minstead Village Hall
MINSTEAD VILLAGE HALL CENTENARY
At the onset of hostilities in 1914 various large temporary huts were erected at a site on the outskirts of Romsey to house and train the thousands of horses that were needed for the War effort, many were shipped in from Canada and North America, landed at Southampton and taken to this Remount facility. At the end of World War I the Government of the Day decided to sell off these now redundant buildings.
Dan Hanbury a local benefactor bought two of these huts probably at the instigation of his wife who was a staunch supporter of the then newly formed W.I. that was in need of a large venue for their meetings (well over 100 women from the village and surrounding area). In 1920 the newly positioned huts formed the main part of the building that you see today. It’s purpose – for the benefit of the villagers and local area – and was known as The Minstead Hut, the largest community building then (as now) in the New Forest.
Over the Century it has had many uses and centre of so many local activities as it continues today – it even underwent a name change after the villagers had paid of the debt to buy the building in 1963 (don’t know the history – read it in the Congelton Room} it is now known as The Minstead Hall. The fabric of the building is much improved and adapted to comply with modern tastes and needs. We learnt the building is sound following a recent Structure report, however we did not think that 100 years should go unnoticed and thought it would provide a good opportunity to add value to the building for future generations. Over the next few years the cladding, especially on the south side (front) needs replacing. There are enough funds to do this but with extra we could re-clad using cedar which not only would look better it would also last much longer, but cost nearly twice as much. To this end we are putting on various activities and events to celebrate the Hall’s centenary and raise funds for this project.

At the behest of Mr Dan Hanbury, Minstead Hut as it was called then was erected on this site in 1920, two wooden huts having been moved from the Re-mount Centre in Romsey. He gave this facility to the villagers of Minstead and its immediate surrounding area for their pleasure, education and use. Sadly it was discovered on his death in 1949 he had not made the relevant legal arrangements and it was therefore included in his estate. With the financial assistance of Lady Congleton it was bought from the estate and a Trust Deed set up emulating his original wishes and the formation of a Management Committee. Many village fund raising events were held during the ensuing years until in 1963 Lady Congleton’s loan was repaid. It was decided to call it The Minstead Village Hall.
