Hurdle making

Before movable metal gates hurdles were used on farms for the folding of sheep simple sturdy and light woven hazel panels were used. The craft was dying, but in the eighties, there was a resurgence in interest in all green wood crafts including hurdles and they became popular for garden fencing.

Join us to learn the basics of this craft and go home with a 3ft hurdle of your own.

Your tutor for the day is Anthony Brown trained as an ecologist and teacher and worked teaching ancient history through rural crafts at the Ancient technology centre in Cranborne, he now builds Ironage roundhouses, makes and sells Greenwood products including hurdles and teaches all sorts of things whenever he’s needed. He made his first hurdle over 20 years ago.
