VILLAGE FETE

Congratulations and thanks to Peter Bennett for organising this year’s highly successful Fete on Saturday and to all the helpers and stall holders involved for their hard work.

The first count shows an approximate take of £890.00.

Also, thank you to Keith who generously donated his £10 prize for the highest score on the bagatelle game to the fete funds?

MINSTEAD MAIL

A further reminder that the next edition of Minstead Mail is in the course of preparation and it will cover the period from September until the New Year.  If you wish to submit anything for inclusion please email it to minsteadpc@googlemail.com.

Many will know that the late Andrew Salanson gave his graphic design skills to help produce the highly professional looking Minstead Mail that we have all enjoyed in recent years.  His contribution will be sorely missed.

Thus we are looking for someone local with graphic design skills who may be able to help in future.  Anyone interested should contact us at minsteadpc@googlemail.com.

HEDGES AND DITCHES

We’ve had some complaints from locals who have been scratched by the ever lengthening tentacles of brambles and other vegetation that are creeping towards the centre of some of our roads!

So all who own hedges along our roads are reminded that they are responsible for cutting them back, keeping them clear for all passers-by and ensuring they are reasonably neat in appearance.  A city park we are not (yet) but it is only reasonable to provide a scratch free clear passage for all our road users.

The next couple of months is the normal time for doing this.

If hedges are badly neglected then the matter will be referred to Hampshire County Council who may ultimately carry out the necessary work and will pass the bill to the landowner.

This also applies to ditches along boundaries.  Even if they are outside the hedge their clearance is still the responsibility of the owner of the boundary.

SECURITY AND DATA PROTECTION

You may have noticed that the locks had been removed from the paper and cardboard recycling bins at the Village Hall.

Unfortunately this could permit unwarranted access to the contents of what may have been considered to be a relatively secure method of disposal.  We consider that this could be a breach of our privacy and NFDC have agreed that the locks should be replaced forthwith, indeed they may already be in place.

Please be reminded of the principles of data protection that prevail nowadays and be sure to dispose of any sensitive or protected data securely.  Such things as letters, lists, bills, invoices, statements etc containing addresses, telephone numbers, account numbers, personal data and so on (whether yours or someone else’s) should be shredded before disposal.

Shredded paper may not be put out with your normal domestic recycling (the clear sack), but should be put in those paper & cardboard recycling bins at the hall (and elsewhere).  It may also be composted at your own home.

SUPERFAST BROADBAND UPDATE

Earlier advice from HCC’S Broadband guru, Glenn Peacey, was wrong he says, and our expected activation period should have been between April and September 2014. Matters are proceeding according to this plan now though there are still some technical issues to be resolved – including completion of the “spine” between Southampton and Romsey (our feed will be from this) and actually “cabling” up the A31 to Cabinet 1 (this may involve closing the A31 W for periods of time with associated problems). Additional funds have been allocated to provide Superfast to more of our properties (ie those outside the initial 1.5-2km from Cabinet 1), probably by 2017, and we are looking at some form of matchfunding or “grant” from HCC towards individuals’ cost of achieving connection outside even this initiative.

We shall keep you updated with any further information as and when this becomes available.

HOUSEHOLD WASTE RECYCLING CENTRE HCC CONSULTATION

Hampshire County Council is reviewing its household waste recycling centre (HWRC) service and wants your feedback on how it can continue to deliver a service that meets the needs of Hampshire residents and represents good value for money for the council taxpayer.

If you don’t currently use the sites, HCC would still like to hear your views in case there is anything it could do to make the service more accessible to you in the future. HCC welcomes any feedback from local businesses, charitable or community organisations and anyone else with an interest in the service.

To find out more and to complete a survey visit http://www3.hants.gov.uk/waste-and-recycling/hwrc-consultation.htm

Paper copies are also available from local council offices and libraries – or call Hantsdirect on: 0845 603 5634 to request one.

The consultation closes on Friday 22 August 2014.

NUISANCE BONFIRES & GARDEN WASTE DISPOSAL

This is a further request that you be considerate about when and where you have a bonfire.  It is not friendly to smoke out your neighbours (especially on hot summer days and evenings when windows may be open) and also you may be creating a health hazard.

It is perfectly reasonable to have a bonfire but a bit of thought and care about the time, the location and the weather conditions can minimise any unpleasant side effects and avoid upsetting your immediate neighbourhood.

To avoid such possible problems and if you have trouble disposing of garden waste then you can join the NFDC’s Garden Waste Scheme which is an easy, affordable way for New Forest residents to dispose of their garden waste.  Bags are collected once a fortnight and composted at a Hampshire facility.

Click here for further information or ring 023 8028 5000.

Alternatively you can take garden waste to the local household waste recycling centre.  Click here for further information or ring 0845 603 5634.

If bonfires are causing a nuisance then it is possible for an Abatement Order to be served upon the person responsible, owner or occupier of the premises (as appropriate) requiring the nuisance to be abated.  Failure to comply with an Abatement Notice is an offence and legal proceedings may result.

For further information about how to make a complaint

see Nuisance Bonfires on the NFDC website

or ring the Environmental Protection Section on 023 8028 5411.

CAR PARK THIEVES – ANDREW’S MARE

Thieves have been operating recently at Andrew’s Mare car park. In one case a rear windscreen was smashed even though there was nothing whatsoever in the car and there has been another similar incident.

The Police have been informed and will hopefully keep an eye out but obviously cannot be there the whole time.

A notice in your windscreen stating that nothing valuable has been left inside might help prevent such occurrences but is not, of course, foolproof!

If you see anything or anyone suspicious you should ring the Police immediately on 101.

If you see a crime actually being carried out ring 999.

 SHEDS AND CATS

A Parishioner asks if we could remind people to check inside sheds, garages etc before closing them for a time to ensure that inquisitive cats are not inadvertently trapped inside.
Hers came home after being missing for more than 24hrs extremely hungry and tired but clean and unruffled, and she suspects that it might have been so trapped.
