COMMUNITY SHOP & CHRISTMAS FAYRE

Many thanks to all who attended the Shareholders’ meeting on Saturday afternoon.  There was an excellent turnout of over 70 to hear from Chairman George Dibben and Treasurer Tim Nicholson about the plans for refurbishing the store at the Trusty Servant and opening the new Shop at Easter.  Much needs to be done over the next few months and the team will be making contact in the New Year with all those in the Community who have volunteered to help – the Shop needs you!

Many thanks also to everyone who helped with the Christmas Fayre that followed, especially Yvonne LeBrun and Annabel Bruxner-Randall.

There were some great stalls and fantastic teas!

MINSTEAD TRUST HAS EXCITING NEWS!

We are once again taking part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge.

There will be updates on social media with the news of the campaign

“I have a learning disability and I want to work”.

This year the Trust is hoping to raise £4000 between midday 3 December to midday 10 December, to help more people with learning disabilities gain valuable work skills and support them to find employment too.  Donations made during the Big Give Challenge will be doubled, so overall the target is £8000.  This money will go directly to the Trust’s Step up for Work project.

The Trust is very grateful for the support from Dom and Marion Young who are supporting our campaign this year, and Dom has kindly agreed to be a contacted if you want to learn more about how they themselves are supporting Minstead Trust and their Big Give campaign.  Alternatively, you can go directly to the Big Give website from midday 3 December, to make your donation and have it doubled! Here is the link.

(parents please hand in clearly labelled presents with a value of £5 or less to the Trusty by midday 21st Dec!!)

BROADBAND NEWS

Openreach has been in contact with the Parish Council to let us know that they have now commissioned 24 out of the 28 connection points for Wave 2 (the first phase, free scheme). This means that some 91 addresses should be able to get FTTP now (Fibre to the Premises/Ultrafast fibre). The remainder of Wave 2 will be completed by the end of the year and, once this infrastructure is built, the Community Fibre Scheme will be able to be constructed from it. We will update you on this as soon as we have news and, please be assured, we are asking continuously for dates for this.

Click HERE for a complete list of those properties in Wave 2 and the Community Fibre Scheme. To check if you have been connected have a look at the Openreach fibre checker https://www.openreach.com/ or the BT broadband availability link https://www.bt.com/broadband/availability/.  If these show download speeds available of 100 Mbps plus then you are in business! If they show speeds around the 0-12 Mbps mark, then you’ll need to wait a little longer to be connected.

If you’ve been upgraded to FTTP please see chart below to follow what to do next. You will not be automatically upgraded. You are instead at the ‘stage 6’ and need to order a fibre/speed upgrade either from the company who provides you with broadband or another of your choice. Speeds now available to Wave 2 households seem to be in the region of 100-300 Mbps depending on the package you choose.

NEW FOREST HEART BEAT REPORT SEPTEMBER 2019

This month’s Beat Report is available to read on the Village website by clicking HERE.

Those who are signed up to Hampshire Alert (click https://www.hampshirealert.co.uk/ if you are not!) will already know that thieves have been stealing from cars parked in New Forest car parks this week.  2 handbags have been taken from cars parked in Fritham and Andrews Mare car parks, both of them had been “hidden”, one under a coat and one under the back seat.  Our Police advise everyone not to leave anything valuable inside your car and not to try and hide anything because you never know who is watching you!

MINSTEAD PLAYERS – CALLING ALL THESPIANS!

Minstead players are looking for budding actors who would like to have a go at treading the boards. This year we are doing 4 very short plays under the heading of Confusions by Alan Ayckbourn.

There must be someone out there who would like to play a grumpy man who wants to be watching the football not treated like a child by his neighbour or perhaps be a business man who is so wrapped in his work that he has no idea that his wife has been on holiday with another man and that he knows the other man well!

Rehearsals are on Tuesdays and Fridays mainly with Thursday on some weeks. Each playlet will be rehearsed separately so you will not be expected to be there is your play is not being rehearsed. The performance dates are 17th and 18th January 2020. You will need to be available for the technical rehearsal which is Saturday 11th January 2020.

Please contact Helen Bennett on 07804046122 or helen.bennett160@yahoo.com

BUILDING SKILLS COURSES FOR RESIDENTS

The New Forest National Park Authority and local buildings expert Kevin Stubbs are delivering a series of evening talks for homeowners in the New Forest.

The talks are part of the Building Skills project, one of 21 projects being delivered through the Our Past, Our Future Landscape Partnership Scheme. The project is informing local people of the importance of traditional buildings to the area’s character whilst providing knowledge of specialist repair techniques. This information is helping conserve and enhance the local distinctiveness of the settlements within the Forest as they raise awareness and encourage sensitive repair and management.

The series of evening talks begins in November on Wednesday evenings in Brockenhurst Village Hall. The subjects that will be covered are as follows:

  • Local heritage of New Forest homes Wednesday 6 November, 7pm – 9.30pm.
  • New Forest cob, thatch, flint and stone Wednesday 20 November, 7pm – 9.30pm.
  • New Forest brick, mortar, plasters and renders Wednesday 4 December, 7pm – 9.30pm.
  • New Forest timber framed buildings and timber roof structure Wednesday 15 January, 7pm – 9.30pm.
  • New Forest tile, slate and lead roof coverings Wednesday 29 January, 7pm – 9.30pm.
  • New Forest building details and finishes Wednesday 12 February, 7pm – 9.30pm.

If you would like to attend one or more of these evenings, please visit our training webpage to book your place: www.newforestnpa.gov.uk/conservation/landscape-partnership/training/ . The cost of a ticket is £5 per person, and you can buy a ticket for all six evenings for £25. If you would like more information, please contact Richard Austin (Richard.austin@newforestnpa.gov.uk or 01590 664661)

FLOWER, FRUIT AND VEGETABLE SHOW

SAT 7TH SEPTEMBER

A huge “Thank You” to all those who organised this year’s Show which was another outstanding success.  It took a lot of hard work by many people and we all owe a great debt of gratitude to everyone on the Flower Show Society Committee. In particular we thank the Chairman, Colin Payne who is stepping down after more years than he cares to remember and the Honorary Treasurer Tim Holt who has decided the time is right to hand over responsibility for all those little brown envelopes!

This year’s show was opened by Paul Glover whose great grandfather started the original show before Paul can remember.  There were in excess of 440 entries with a very high standard in all classes so well done everyone and congratulations to the winners!!

A great many visitors enjoyed looking at the exhibits and also the excellent teas provided by the hard working team in the hall kitchen.

Please note that the Society’s AGM will be held in the Congleton Room on 3rd December and everyone is welcome to attend to give support.  Any specific suggestions should be sent to the Secretary Jo Instrall at joinstrall@gmail.com at least two weeks prior to the meeting.

BROADBAND IN MINSTEAD

Update 6th September 2019

Thank you all for being so patient and we hope that this update will bring some encouragement.

You will have seen that Openreach and their contractors have been busy installing fibre for the Cadnam V35 (Minstead Wave2) part of their network, and we can say that effective connections have been made to and from the central distribution point in the middle of the village.

We have heard today that at least one Wave 2 customer has been offered FTTP as an option for their broadband so it looks as though some people could be live now.

Our information is that maybe as much as 40% of V35 (Wave2) structure could have already been upgraded to this stage, but we do not yet have an expected date for completion of the remaining 60%.

When, or if, we are notified of the addresses of the 40% that have gone live we shall let you know.

Our information regarding the Community Fibre Braodband Scheme is that “Openreach is working on the deployment plan and there may be some more news on this shortly.

We hope that this information and evidence of progress is encouraging.

FOR 4G BROADBAND USERS – UNLIMITED PLANS NOW AVAILABLE

For those of you in Minstead using 4G dongles for home broadband (while we await fibre!) some providers are now offering unlimited data plans which work well in Minstead. For example, Vodafone and EE. Note that some of these plans come with hidden speed limitations – for example – the Vodafone Unlimited plan comes with a 10mbps limit where as the more expensive Unlimited Max plan offers the fastest speed available. You should also ensure these plans are compatible with your dongle.

THE NEW FOREST MARATHON 8th SEPTEMBER

It’s the New Forest Marathon this Sunday and that means some road closures, though not in our area. The link below has lots of very useful information that will help if you are out and about in the Forest on Sunday.
https://www.newforestmarathon.co.uk/residents-information/

ROADS MAINTENANCE

The Parish Council does its best to report all road problems in Minstead to Hampshire County Council using the online reporting system and by direct contact.

We are very aware that the state of our roads is poor and have shown the worst areas to HCC engineers.

If you notice any particular problems please report these on line by visiting

https://www.hants.gov.uk/transport/roadmaintenance

and choosing the heading that best suits the situation.

If reported online HCC have to assess the problem, and the more people that report it, the greater the likelihood of something being done though no guarantees are given!

A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY – 2nd NOVEMBER

A Service will be held on 2nd November in Minstead Church at 12.00 to remember Malcolm McCarraher and to inter his ashes in the Churchyard.  Janet would like as many of you as remember Malcolm and her in the Village to come to join in the service and afterwards to meet in the Village Hall for lunch.

Please let Janet know if you would like to come by emailing to eugeniemcc@gmail.com so she can get a rough idea of numbers from the Village for catering.

She says:

“You see we still remember you in Minstead as we never changed our email!”

MERCHANT NAVY DAY TUESDAY 3RD SEPTEMBER

We managed to hoist the Red Ensign on Merchant Navy Day

A Historical Note

Merchant seamen crewed the ships of the British Merchant Navy which kept the United Kingdom supplied with raw materials, arms, ammunition, fuel, food and all of the necessities of a nation at war throughout World War II – literally enabling the country to defend itself. In doing this, they sustained a considerably greater casualty rate than almost every other branch of the armed services and suffered great hardship. Seamen were aged from fourteen through to their late seventies.

The office of the Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen calculated that 144,000 merchant seamen were serving aboard British registered merchant ships at the outbreak of World War II and that up to 185,000 men and women served in the Merchant Navy during the war.  36,749 seamen and women were lost to enemy action, 5,720 were taken prisoner and 4,707 were wounded, totalling 47,176 casualties, a minimum casualty rate of over 25 percent.

TRUSTY SERVANT VACANCY

The Trusty has a vacancy for a part time weekend house keeper with added holiday cover.  Please call The Trusty Servant (023 8081 2137) or pop in for a chat for further information.

MINSTEAD COMMUNITY SHOP SHARES ISSUE

There has been slower progress this week towards our target of £25,000, only £1,000 added to the contributions.  Thank you to those 4 generous contributors!  So progress has slackened with only 3 weeks to go and if you are thinking about making a contribution now would be a great time.
