See Hampshire Libraries Newsletter “Read All About It!” which includes information about a new pilot project that aims to improve access to digital and online services by loaning iPads to eligible residents across Hampshire.

VOTER REGISTRATION

Residents of the New Forest will shortly be receiving a form asking them to check and update the information that appears on the electoral register for their address.  The form ensures that NFDC can keep the electoral register up to date and identify any residents who are not registered so that they can be encouraged to do so. The Electoral Registration Officer at New Forest District Council has emphasised that it is important that residents respond as soon as possible, so the Council can make sure it has the right details on the electoral register for every address in the district.  You are asked to read the form carefully when it arrives and follow the instructions.

Many thanks again to all who helped!

SAVE THE DATE – JUNIOR MINSTEAD PANTO SIGN-UP

Tuesday 19th September 2017

We would like to invite all families with children young and old to a ‘Sign-up Night’ on Tuesday 19th September from 5pm -7pm in the Village Hall. This is in preparation for our Junior Minstead children’s pantomime production which is now in its 41st year. It is always a fabulous opportunity for the children (and parent/family helpers) to get to know and work alongside each other.

Cast age range is between 5 – 16 years old.

(NB Membership of Junior Minstead is required but details of this will be given at the meeting).

We’d also like to enquire whether there are any willing community volunteers who would like to help with jobs such as costume making, refreshments or set decoration at a later stage. Please let Elaine Barriball know if this is something you would like to do. (elaine@barriballs.net).

VILLAGE FETE SATURDAY 12TH AUGUST

Fete4 Fete3

Very many thanks to all those who helped with yesterday’s Village Fete.  A lot of hard work went into making it a very successful and enjoyable day and we hope to have raised a worthwhile amount for the church tower fund and this year’s chosen charity, SSAFA.

Fete2 Fete1

FLOWER SHOW SATURDAY 2ND SEPTEMBER

The Minstead Flower Show Society hopes everyone has seen the schedule for this year’s show which will be held in the Hall on Saturday 2nd September.

In case you have mislaid your copy you can find it here 2017 Schedule FLOWER SHOW.  It includes an entry form which should be completed and returned to Mrs H Orman, Merrie Orchard, Football Green, Minstead  SO437FR no later than  Wednesday 30th  August 2017.  Alternatively, it can be emailed to hmorman70@gmail.com  and fees paid on the morning of the Show.

There are all sorts of classes for all ages and talents and some especially fun things for children to have a go at.

So, with less than 3 weeks to go, it is time to survey your flowers and vegs and start planning you entries!

There will also be a book stall, various raffles, tombola and of course the traditional fantastic teas!

Anything you can donate for the tombola can be handed in to the shop.

REPORT POTHOLES ON LINE

If you see a pothole or other problems and issues on roads, footpaths and verges the best way to get something done about it is to report it on line to Hampshire County Council.

This is easy to do by visiting: https://www.hants.gov.uk/transport/roadmaintenance/roadproblems.

THE GLEBE FIELD

We have been asked to promulgate the following:

“The Owners have been informed by NFDC that they will be reinstating their boundary with the Glebe Field along its entire length, without the existing pedestrian access. This is because NFDC do not want any possibility of a right of way being established over their verge between the end of Congleton Close and the Glebe Field boundary. The Owners are informed that the work will be carried out next week.”

The Parish Council has asked Minstead’s District Councillor to intervene to try to retain the customary pedestrian access.

HCC BALANCING THE BUDGET – CONSULTATION

Hampshire County Council is asking for residents’ and stakeholders’ views on high level, strategic options for balancing its budget.

Due to ongoing national austerity measures; demographic changes reflecting increases in demand for some services; and inflationary pressures, by April 2019 the County Council will be facing an anticipated budget shortfall of £140 million.  With less money available and growing demand for council services, tough decisions will need to be made about what the County Council can and cannot do in the future.

The range of options for balancing the budget can be read in an

Information Pack on HCC’s website.

Your feedback will help to inform the approach the County Council takes to balancing its budget.  Any changes to specific services will be subject to further, more detailed consultation.

You can complete the consultation on line by clicking here.

Paper copies are available from Hampshire Libraries.

The consultation closes on Monday 21st August.

BROADBAND UNIVERSAL SERVICE OBLIGATION – CONSULTATION

The Government legislated in the Digital Economy Act 2017 to enable the creation of a new broadband Universal Service Obligation (USO), giving every household and business the right to request a broadband connection at a minimum speed, up to a reasonable cost threshold – no matter where they live or work.  It is now seeking views on the specification for the USO that would be set in secondary legislation..

The consultation document and how to respond can be read by clicking here.  Both individuals and organisations are eligible to respond and should do so by 9th October 2017.

BUT PERHAPS BEST OF ALL, ENJOY OUR LOVELY FOREST……..!

Enjoy the Forest

SEARCHING FOR MINSTEAD’S LONG-LOST POOR HOUSE (2)

P1010164

Braving variable weather conditions, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday saw a number of people surveying in the field adjacent to Lyndhurst Road between North Lodge and Ivy Farm Cottage through several means including a geophysics survey using an RM15 twin probe resistance meter and a Fluxgate Gradiometer(!), dowsing and a metal detector. The raw data from the first two has been downloaded and shows …….. well, sadly not much at present that is intelligible to amateurs! However, the NFPA’s archaeologist will do further analysis to look at what might be indicated and guide the group in where to focus their efforts. He thought everyone did really well and shouldn’t be downhearted at this early stage. The 3 days were fun, frustrating and physically exhausting in equal measures but best of all this is proving to be a great community activity, with new friendships formed in adversity and new skills mastered by all. More work is planned on Weds 9th and Thurs 10th so keep watching out for more activity and news!

SEARCHING FOR MINSTEAD’S LONG LOST POOR HOUSE!

A Tithe Map from 1841 shows a small poor house in the village that was in use until around 1836 when its role was taken over by a larger workhouse in Ashurst. It was sited in a field that lies between North Lodge and Ivy Farm Cottage, although no physical remains are still visible. With kind permission from landowners Sylvia and George Dibben, some members of the Minstead History Group and the NFPA’s Community Archaeologist will be undertaking a geophysics survey of the field using a magnetometer loaned by Bournemouth University to try and detect undersoil evidence of the exact location of the poor house. Watch out from Tuesday 1st August for signs of this ‘Time Team’ activity in the field when you go pass it going along the Lyndhurst Road, near to Football Green!

RAGWORT

A further plea to everyone to pull ragwort in their area during this coming week of 17th July!

If you can’t manage it please let us know and we’ll try and get someone over to do it for you. If you are pulling it a fork helps and you are advised to wear gloves and also a hi-vis vest if you are walking along road verges.  Please dispose of it with normal garden waste or rubbish.

MINSTEAD OIL

Orders for heating oil for delivery in July should be received by MinsteadOil by 9am this Wednesday 19th July. One order (for 1000 litres) has already been received (on 16th June) and Mike Hutton hopes this still stands!

Delivery would be expected within 10 days of 19th July but those who order will be advised as to price and delivery once this is established.

Subsequent order dates are 20th September and monthly thereafter.

FUTURE USE OF PHONE BOX

The Parish Council is supporting a proposal to develop the phone box opposite the Trusty into a Sir Arthur Conan Doyle museum and information point.  A project team has been set up locally and anyone wishing to participate should get in touch with Sylvie Dibben (Email sylvia@dibben.net).

CPR and DEFIBRILLATOR TRAINING 13TH JULY

A further reminder that there are some places still available for Minstead parishioners on a first aid course on CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and the use of our defibrillator this Thursday 13 July from 11.00 – 12.30 in the Green Room.  If you are interested please contact Councillor Helen Bennett on 023 8081 2358 or Helen.benett160@yahoo.com.

RAGWORT

Although Ragwort (stinking willie) provides a home and food source to at least 77 insect species it is also very poisonous to horses and cattle and therefore particularly unwelcome in the New Forest.

Everyone is encouraged to pull ragwort in their area (and anywhere else they think needs it!) during the week of 17th July.  If you can’t manage it please let us know and we’ll try and get someone over to do it for you. If you are pulling it a fork helps and you are advised to wear gloves and also a hi-vis vest if you are walking along road verges.  Please dispose of it with normal garden waste or rubbish.

GLEBE FIELD

The owners of the Glebe Field wish to protect it against unlawful and unwanted use or occupation, but still allow it to be used for the benefit of the village.  To this end they will be taking action to restrict vehicular access whilst still allowing access to animals and pedestrians.  There will be arrangements in place for vehicular access should it be necessary for either animal or human emergency.

MINSTEAD HISTORY GROUP 11TH JULY

The next meeting will be in the Social Club at 8pm on Tuesday 11th July when there will be an entertaining talk by Richard Reeves about “Medieval Minstead”.

NEW OFFER FROM FLOGAS

All Flogas LPG customers who are in the Minstead Parish buying group scheme (ref: code 819) with bulk tanks, not cylinders, should receive a letter with details of a new fixed rate 2 year contract offer, in the post in the next few days. This improved offer has been negotiated by a member and it means that all members will be on the same rate and the same end date of contract. The offer (see LPG BUYING SCHEME OFFER July 2017 – Minstead Buying group) is: 30.28 ppl + Vat @ 5%, fixed for two years. All tank rental is 14.25 p per day + Vat = £13 per quarter (+ 5 % Vat) This is a reduction from the previous contract offer of two years ago!

If any member does not receive this new contract offer in the next few days, please contact Christopher Tompkins (of Flogas) on 08009176112 and quote the reference: Minstead buying group 819.This offer may be available to other parishioners who are presently with other LPG suppliers depending upon contract expiry date.

RECREATIONAL MANAGEMENT STRATEGY

Some big issues are facing the New Forest in the coming years. The organisations with the main remit for both protecting the National Park and enabling people to enjoy it need your help to:

  • provide the best recreational experience for local people and our visitors
  • protect the very thing people come to see – the spectacular, yet fragile landscape which is a haven for many rare wildlife species
  • ensure limited resources are spent wisely.

The Forestry Commission, Natural England, Hampshire County Council, New Forest District Council and the Verderers have asked the National Park Authority to lead on the consultation.

If you wish to comment on the initial draft strategy you should do so by 13th August.

To find out more and to see how to join in the debate and comment visit the NPA Website

There are still a number of roadshows but unfortunately the one in Lyndhurst was on 4th July!  See RMS Poster for these and how to request a printed survey.

CONNECT TO SUPPORT HAMPSHIRE

For those who have not already found it, the County Council have a very comprehensive website Connect to Support Hampshire which provides an online information and advice guide and directory of services for adults with care and support needs who live in Hampshire.

NEW APP FOR NEW FOREST HEALTH & LEISURE

Customers using New Forest District Council’s five health and leisure centres are benefitting from a new app.
Class bookings, swim times, centre news, and special offers are all available on the go, on the app, along with online chat, membership details, and notifications of important centre information.
The new app has many additional features and users can even social share their fitness plans with friends at the touch of a button.
Available to download free from the iOS App and Android Play stores.
Visit the NFDC website if you wish to know more.

 VILLAGE HALL RUBBISH

The Hall actually pays for the hall rubbish to be taken away, which is 15 bags a week in green sacks plus its entitlement of 6 bags in black sacks. Recently the hall rubbish area next to the bus stage has been used by others as a rubbish dump, including recycle bags even a duvet! While of course this may not be village people all are reminded that all residents are entitled to put bags out for the weekly collection, that this area is for hall rubbish only and that there is the also the NFDC recycling facility at the back of the hall for bottles and recyclable waste.

Thanks to all for supporting the Hall!
