LPG AND HEATING OIL BUYING SCHEMES

As heating oil and LPG prices have dropped significantly over the last year it is probably worth checking what you’re paying by ringing the various suppliers. For the convenience of all in Minstead the following competitive schemes are available:

  • For those using oil, Mike Hutton will be bulk ordering (for those who request it by e-mail at minsteadoil@gmail.com) on 12th November and 3rd December 2014.  This requires that you confirm that he can order for you at the best price he can get, and tell him so when you place your request. A reminder and further details will be promulgated nearer the time.
  • For those using LPG, see LPG BUYING SCHEME OFFER OCT 14 – Minstead Buying group for the attached latest offer from Flogas  which is likely to be competitive but there may be others who can match this price or even better it! Anyone already with Flogas in the “Minstead Buying Group” will be paying the same as the offer and should they have received a letter from Flogas with an increase in their price per litre of LPG they should disregard this as all parties  signed up to the “Minstead Buying Group” will be paying 41.5 ppl (on bulk tank supplies).

BEAT REPORT

See Beat report Sept14 for our area.

BROADBAND UPDATE

We have heard recently from the Marketing Executive of the Hampshire Superfast Broadband Programme with regard to Cabinet 1 at the A31/Lyndhurst Road junction that they

are experiencing a slight delay in the delivery of our cabinet but that it is still due to be completed within our programme.  This is due to difficult access to the cabinet – in close proximity to a busy road. Due to problems with road closure Openreach are now going to utilise an alternative solution. This cabinet is scheduled to be delivered by the end of November.”

We are sure that you are already aware (but repeat it here just in case) that connecting your router directly to the “First Entry, Master, BT socket” will give you the best result possible for your existing line.

HOW WE USED TO LIVE, EMERY DOWN HISTORY GROUP

Our first talk is on Tuesday, 7th October 2014 at 7.30pm in Bank and Emery Down Village Hall as follows:-

The War Graves Photographic Project

By Steve Rogers

Discovering his family history sparked Steve’s interest in war graves.  His talk will include both subjects.  Steve’s grandfather, Frank Rogers, is inscribed on our lych gate and on the cenotaph in Lyndhurst.  After visiting relations’ graves in Belgium Steve decided to photograph and research all 1,250 ROGERS men who died in WW1.  With the recognition of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission in 2007 the “Rogers project” became a volunteer run international project to photograph the graves and memorials that commemorate war dead around the world.

Steve’s family originates from Ringwood in the late 1500’s before moving to Lyndhurst in the 1800’s so he could be considered a ‘local’!!  Steve served in the Royal Navy for 32 years and left as a Warrant Officer in 2007.  He is now in full-time employment with BAE Maritime services in Portsmouth.

Please come and bring your friends.  Refreshments will be available.

The series of talks continues monthly on the first Tuesday: 4 November 2014, 2 December 2014, 3 February 2015, 3 March 2015.  Further dates to be announced.

ATTEMPTED NON DWELLING BURGLARY

Opportunist thieves have been in the area again and were disturbed at Stoney  Cross attempting to steal from outbuildings last Friday morning at 5 am. The Police have been informed.  No description possible but it followed a very similar pattern to a theft a couple of years ago. Please keep an eye open and ring 101 if you see anything or anyone suspicious.

With the evenings drawing in all are advised to make sure that their outbuildings and sheds are locked securely.

A NOTE FROM THE SHOP

“Hello, it’s more like a lack of a note really as I just wanted to let you know that the cash machine is going to be removed at some point. It is totally the firm’s decision, not mine, and the reason given is lack of use. I apologise to everyone who uses the facility. I am looking into finding a replacement, preferably a non charging arrangement and will do my best, however new non charging arrangements are not as available as they were.

Apologies again and thank you to everyone for your support.

VILLAGE FLOWER, FRUIT AND VEGETABLE SHOW SAT 6TH SEPTEMBER

 Colourful Flower Show

This year’s Show was another outstanding success thanks to all those who contributed exhibits and to all the hard work by the Committee and other helpers.

After a welcome by Chairman Mr Colin Payne, President Mr Peter Danby introduced Dr Julian Lewis MP who formally opened the Show and presented the Cups and Special Awards.  There were 553 entries with 145 of those in Div 4 (Young People) with 43 different children producing those 145 entries, amazing!  The Judges always rate the quality of the exhibits and are always surprised that a small village like Minstead can put on such a fabulous display.  The colours especially were spectacular from the moment you walked in the door.  In addition a great many teas were served and greatly enjoyed.

A special note of thanks goes to Mrs Janet Mitchell, Hon Secretary whose tireless efforts, knowledge and experience made the Show such a wonderful and memorable occasion.

 Well done everyone!

Over 550 entires in the Flower Show

HEDGES AND DITCHES REMINDER

This is a further reminder to all who own hedges and ditches along our roads that they are responsible for cutting them back and keeping them clear.

If hedges or ditches are badly neglected then the matter will be referred to Hampshire County Council who may ultimately carry out the necessary work and will pass the bill to the landowner. Even if ditches are outside the hedge their clearance is still the responsibility of the owner of the boundary.

CLERANCE OF SCRUB AND SMALL TREES TO RESTORE THE LAWN ON OUR 3 GREENS

Over the next few weeks the Forestry Commission will be cutting back scrub and small tress on our Upper Green, Football Green and Shave Green to restore the lawn out to its proper boundary.

 MINSTEAD MAIL

A further reminder that the next edition of Minstead Mail is in the course of preparation and it will cover the period from September until the New Year.  If you wish to submit anything for inclusion please email it to minsteadpc@googlemail.com.

Many will know that the late Andrew Salanson gave his graphic design skills to help produce the highly professional looking Minstead Mail that we have all enjoyed in recent years.  His contribution will be sorely missed.

Thus we are looking for someone local with graphic design skills who may be able to help in future.  Anyone interested should contact us at minsteadpc@googlemail.com.

 BOGUS COLD CALLERS

Residents should be aware of bogus cold callers claiming to be from Solent Green Deal and New Forest District Council
New Forest District Council has been made aware that several residents in the district have received cold calls from two individuals claiming to be working with the council on the Solent Green Deal scheme and asking for householders’ details. Reports so far have been from the Lyndhurst area. These individuals are not representing the council or Solent Green Deal. Neither the council nor Solent Green Deal use cold callers to promote schemes or services and all NFDC staff working on council business carry formal identification with them.
Residents who receive a cold call like this are asked to report it to the Police by telephoning 101.

 INCREASING PROBLEMS WITH BROADBAND

There seems to have been a growing number of problems with broadband in recent days, in particular with frequent losses of connection for short periods and abnormally low speeds (even for Minstead!), which may be related to work on the BT cabinet at the top of the village.

If you experience this sort of fault either with you broadband service or your landline you should call your Internet Service Provider or BT on 0800 111 4567 (landline) or 0330 123 4567 (mobile).

 THEFT OF COPPER EARTHING STRIPS

Our local police have asked all to be aware about  the theft of the copper earthing strips from electricity poles. The SSE carry out four yearly inspections and in 2014 they have found that a handful of the poles in the Forest have had their copper strips stolen, the most recent being in the Minstead area. Although the metal is of relatively low value it is an essential safety feature should there be any issues with the supply.

If you believe you have seen suspicious activity around electricity or telephone poles please ring the Police on 101.

 PHISHING AGAIN

NFDC have warned that there looks to be a new phishing email circulating at the moment.  It implies it’s from HMRC suggesting that you have a tax refund but HMRC have confirmed that they will never send out an email of this nature.  Please do not ‘Click here’ as it advises, it definitely does not take you to an HMRC site.  You are advised to delete the email as soon as possible.

In addition someone has been phished by a site called human-eyes.sakura.ne.jp  which appears to have obtained bank details and at first sight looks quite genuine.

You are advised to be very careful to check any website requesting sensitive personal details before entering any data whatsoever!

It may not be what it seems to be!
