MINSTEAD  BELL  RINGERS

Last weekend Minstead bell ringers took part in a District ‘Striking Competition’ and for the second year running, won a trophy! ‘Striking’ means when the bell sounds; the skill here is for the sound of each bell to be evenly spaced, with no gaps or jerks. Minstead scored 85%, a big lead over the team in second place.  We are proud to have retained the trophy.
Minstead Ringers work hard to improve their skills, we practise on Thursday evenings and on most Wednesday mornings and, as with most things, the more you practise, the better you get.
Visitors are welcome to come up the tower and see what ringing is about, please just ask.  Anyone interested in learning to ring can arrange to have a try. To enjoy ringing you need enthusiasm and commitment to practise; there is no particular need for strength, or musical or mathematical skills!  Contact Polly Osborne, poloz@btinternet.com  02380 812375

Vivienne Prophet

Those who know her will be sad to hear that Vivienne passed away, aged 94, on Tuesday March 18th.  She and her late husband Arthur lived in Minstead for many years; they were much loved characters and generous contributors to the community of Minstead. Vivienne’s Funeral will be held at

Worcester Crematorium,12.30 p.m. on Friday 28th March 2014.

Arthur Phillip – a message from Angela Trend

I’m researching Captain Arthur Phillip who led the First Fleet of convicts to Australia and became the first Governor, establishing the foundations to what became Australia. 2014 is the bicentenary of his death. Arthur Phillip lived for a time at a house called Vernalls in Gosport Lane by Goose Green, Lyndhurst. There is still a nameplate saying Vernalls Farm although the house has long gone.

I’ve found a newspaper article (Daily Echo 1944) about Arthur Philip, his life and Vernalls. It says that Vernalls was a ‘comfortable country house with a rather fine Georgian staircase .. fine paneling.’ This staircase ‘is known to have been reconstructed and used in a charmingly designed house built shortly before in Emery Down.’ The stone entrance was used in the construction of another country house at Minstead.

Please can anyone help? Does anyone live in or know of a house or houses built prewar with a fine staircase or stone doorway?

We cannot find any photos of Verrnalls. Do you know of any? I would be grateful for any information.

If you can help please contact angela.trend@nfcb.me.uk.

Thank you.

Message of the Week from Berry Stone

“Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man Concert March 22nd at 7.30pm St Michael and All Angels Church, Lyndhurst

I have pledged to raise at least £2000 profit from this concert to be divided 50% Help for Heroes, 25 % All Saints’ Minstead and 25% St Michael and All Angels. Thanks to generous local sponsorship from The Prince Foundation and Costa Coffee, Lyndhurst a good start has been made to the fund BUT I now have to sell at least 200 tickets to ensure that I reach my target and cover the concert’s costs.

Please support my hard work in organising this concert and buy a ticket to come and hear a stunning piece of choral music which was composed as a Mass for Peace. If you can’t make the evening performance make a donation and come and listen to the afternoon rehearsal.

Tickets (£10) are on sale at Minstead Village Shop or can be ordered from me – Berry Stone 023 8081 3719

This 3 hour workshop will get you singing joyfully in parts, a selection of easy to learn songs that herald the coming of Spring and the joy of new seasons from places as far afield as Botswana, Bulgaria, Essex and Jeremy’s own composition.

An afternoon of full-throated vocal expression and the visits to exciting new vocal territory is guaranteed!

Church warden.  After the APCM on 23rd April George Dibben will be stepping down from being churchwarden.  Please reflect on who might take his place.

Bulb planting. We would like to add some snowdrops to the bulbs we planted last autumn.  Many people prefer to plant snowdrops in full leaf, i.e.” in the green”.  If you would like to plant some in the churchyard we will be doing this at about 11.30, after the service on Feb 23rd.  Bring trowel, gloves, fork and bulbs if you can get them………If you cannot get to the service meet us at the church porch at 11.30 for refreshments. We will identify on a church yard map where you have planted your bulbs.

Worship Group.  The recent meeting agreed to try holding some gatherings in the afternoon to engage more with the village community.  The first one will be on Palm Sunday at 4pm, starting on the village green.

 LYNDHURST CHURCH CONCERT 22nd MARCH

Karl Jenkins’ “The Armed Man”, a mass for peace, was commissioned by the Royal Armouries Museum for the Millennium celebrations. It was originally dedicated to victims of the Kosovo crisis.

This is a highly evocative and moving work which will be performed in St Michael’s Church in Lyndhurst for the first time. It is especially appropriate that it is to be performed in the year of the centenary of the outbreak of World War 1. The concert is being performed by members of various choirs who will be coming together on the day to raise funds for Help for Heroes, for St Michael and All Angels, Lyndhurst and All Saints’, Minstead. If you are a singer who knows the piece well please do apply to Berry Stone for a place in the choir. The concert is taking place with the support of The Prince Foundation.

A team is needed to run the raffle on the day.  As 25% of the amount raised is destined for All Saints’ it would be great if the congregation could help out by providing this team.

For further details contact Berry Stone on 023 8081 3719 or berrymstone@btinternet.com

Contrary to popular belief, ringing bells does not require either strength or musical ability – just enthusiasm and some commitment to practise once or twice a week. Minstead practices are held every Thursday 19.30 – 21.00. Ringing is a social activity that exercises the brain as well as the body. If you are interested please contact Peter Bennett (023 8081 2358) or Polly Osborne (023 8081 2375). We would love to hear from you!

For further details contact Berry Stone on 023 8081 3719 or berrymstone@btinternet.com

The Minstead Training Trust believes that everyone has a right to live independent and meaningful lives and wants to grow its services for adults with learning disabilities.  But we need the help of a strong, strategic board of Trustee who can help set the charity’s strategic direction, support its development and ensure that it meets its legal and regulatory responsibilities.

Our board of Trustees meets on a quarterly basis and are now looking for new Trustees with entrepreneurial, business or financial backgrounds who are willing to share their skills and experience to take us to the next stage of our development.

 UNEXPLAINED DOG DEATHS – UPDATE

There have been two suspected cases over the past three weeks – one from Sway and one from Tiptoe. One dog survived and one dog unfortunately died. Pathology results from the dog that died are expected soon. This will allow authorities to better determine if they are dealing with the same problem as last year. Despite extensive testing, the exact underlying cause unfortunately remains unknown.

Visit the NPA or NFDC websites for further information and advice.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF OWNERS OF PROPERTY ADJOINING A RIVER, STREAM, DITCH OR OTHER WATERCOURSE

If you own land adjoining a watercourse, you have certain rights and responsibilities. In legal terms you are a ‘riparian owner’. A watercourse is any natural or artificial channel through which water flows, such as a river, brook, beck, or mill stream.   Some of your responsibilities include: maintaining river beds and banks; allowing the flow of water to pass without obstruction; controlling invasive alien species such as Japanese knotweed. Also, the riparian owner is usually the owner of roadside ditches. Even if a ditch is outside the property boundary, ownership remains with the adjacent landowner as riparian owner. It does not make any difference that the road drains into the ditch/watercourse.

For further information visit the HCC website.
