FLOWER SHOW SATURDAY 2ND SEPTEMBER

This year’s Show, the sixty-sixth, was another outstanding success thanks to lots of hard work by many.   There were a massive 563 entries and once again the Hall looked spectacular and the judges commented on the very high standard of all the exhibits.

The Show was opened by Minstead’s pantomime celebrity Emma Vardy who took time off from her day job as a BBC journalist and reporter to be with us.

IMG_20170902_144953

Introducing  Emma, the Flower Show Society Chairman Colin Payne thanked all the Committee for their hard work, especially those doing it for the first time.  Emma remarked on the huge amount of effort that had gone into preparing for the show, the high standard of exhibits and was impressed by the creativity from all parts of the Village community.  She was delighted to declare the Show Open!

Next year’s show will be on Saturday 1st September 2018.

FLYING THE RED ENSIGN

Merchant Navy Day on 3rd September has been commemorated since 2000 but only for the past two years has it been the focus of a nationwide campaign to raise public awareness of our ongoing reliance on seafarers and shipping.

We are flying the Red Ensign – the Red Duster as it is affectionately known – on the Village Green today in memory of all those merchant seamen who lost their lives in both World Wars and in recognition of the crucial contribution they continue to make today to the welfare and economy of our country.

To find out more visit http://www.seafarers.uk/.

SSAFA

We have received thanks from SSAFA New Forest Division for the donation following the Village Fete.  Setting aside the financial benefit, it was a very successful day in terms of getting SSAFA’s message out to people, many of whom had never previously heard of us.  To find out more about their work please visit https://www.ssafa.org.uk/.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR OIL TSAR

“As you may have gathered from my last communication regarding the January date for Oil ordering, I was still not in tune with the calendar!

ALL order deadlines will be 9am on a Wednesday starting with Wednesday 4th January 2017. Orders will be accepted on the basis that I will place them at the best price I can obtain on the day.

Subsequent dates are:-

February 8th; March 15th; May 17th; July 19th; September 20th; October 18th; November 15th and December 6th.

As usual I will send out reminders a week or so before deadline dates and deadline times will remain 9am on the relevant Wednesday. In general, delivery can usually be expected within 7 working days from the deadline date.

Note that there is no order date in April, June or August. Equally, the reminder in May could be either earlier or only a few days before the deadline as I am trying to plan a holiday in early May!

Best wishes to you all for a Happy Christmas and prosperous New Year.

 “RURAL POLICING MATTERS” CAMPAIGN

The Rural Services Network (RSN) is encouraging members and supporters to respond to a government consultation on funding rural policing. The RSN is supporting a ‘rural policing matters’ campaign by the National Rural Crime Network (NRCN), which is encouraging consultation responses. NRCN research due to be published next month shows trust in policing is much lower than residents of urban areas. Without proper resourcing for rural police forces, it is possible that some crimes and anti-social behaviour might not get the attention they deserve. The NRCN argues that a proposed new funding formula fails to take into account the unit-cost of policing a rural area. It says the formula also fails to reflect the majority of work the police do which is not in fact crime-related such as road safety or responding to welfare issues. Both the RSN and the NRCN are encouraging as many rural residents as possible to respond to the government consultation on the issue. They believe that the new police funding formula should recognise the “inbuilt complexities” of dealing with crime in rural, isolated areas. Full details about the ‘rural policing matters’ campaign, including the consultation, are available on the NRCN website here. To ensure your voice is heard, they suggest responding to the government’s consultation using a prepared template letter available here. They are also encouraging people to sign the ‘rural policing matters’ petition, which is also available here. Please bear in mind that all consultation responses have to be with the government by 15 September.

Local Youth Group Presents Two Charities with Fund Raising Cheques after a “Spooktactular” Pantomime!

The talented children of Junior Minstead, ranging in age from 3 to 15 years old put a “Spooktacular” pantomime, with their gothic slapstick take of:

Dracula – The Vampire that Bites Back – It’s a Thriller!

After 3 months of rehearsals, the children put on two “fangtastic” performances. On each night the group also held a raffle for their nominated Charities.

This year the group raised £154.00 for the Hampshire and IOW Air Ambulance and £206.00 for Help the Heroes.

Wendy Hague, Chair of the group, said we are a small village self-help group, which has been running for over 38 years now.  We have always supported both National and Local Charities over the years.

Neil Bowen, volunteer from Help for Heroes and Toby Hazan, volunteer from the Hampshire and IOW Air Ambulance accepted the cheques on their charities behalf from the group on Tuesday 12th May.

Both gentlemen thanked all the children and adult helper’s for their efforts and for choosing their respective charities. They also spoke to the children about the important work both charities do.

The support received from the community and in particular from our younger fundraisers, is very important to us and much appreciated stated Toby Hazan from the HIOW Air Ambulance,  if it wasn’t for the support and help from groups like Junior Minstead , the charities wouldn’t operate……as ever penny counts!

MINSTEAD ALL SAINTS

For the week’s Notices, details of Services and other events see the Benefice website and follow All Saints activities on Facebook.

Revd Cyril Payne died on December 27th last year.  He was 88 and had been in Belmore Lodge retirement home at Lymington for two years.  In the mid 1990’s Cyril was sent to All Saints’ Minstead as priest in charge and stayed for nearly two years.  During this period he brought great healing after a difficult time for All Saints. He was much loved in this parish.  The Thanksgiving service for Cyril will be on Monday 12th January at 2.30pm at St Thomas’s, Lymington. If you would like to know the address of Shelah, his widow, please contact one of the churchwardens:

Isabel  Yeo (02380 282724 isabel@yeo-family.org.uk)

Elizabeth Randall (02380 811115 elizrandall@btinternet.com)

 ICY ROADS

The recent cold spell caused ice to form in some places on our roads and at least one incident when a vehicle overturned (thankfully, no serious injuries).  The Parish Council has urged HCC and local property owners frequently over several years to clear ditches, culverts, drains, bunnies etc to try and reduce the places where water spills out on to our roads in wet weather, with the potential to freeze in cold weather but there remain many places where this still occurs.  Grit bins are located near most of the more hazardous places but as their precise positions are subject to approval by the Verderers they are not always in the best place. If you live near one and have a few minutes to spare then spreading a bit of grit around in freezing conditions would make our roads safer and help you warm up!

Meanwhile, everyone is warned to be extremely careful when driving, riding or walking along our roads in freezing conditions.

VIDEO OF THE MUMMERS

A video of the Minstead Mummer’s performance at the Trusty Servant on 20TH December is being put together.  If you have any video recordings or photos of the performance, Nick Mellersh would love to have them to improve the video. Any video shot, however short, or any still photo however blurred, would be really useful.  Please contact Nick on 02380 8112651 or via email at nandjmellersh@yahoo.co.uk.

 MINSTEAD OIL

From now on, all requests for oil made to Minstead Oil will be accepted as firm orders UNLESS you specify that you wish to be advised of price, delivery or company (or any combination) AT THE TIME OF Ordering. Mike Hutton will remind you of this for the next few occasions.

The order dates for 2015 (all by 9.00am on a Wednesday) are :-

14th January; 18th February; 18th March; 13th May; 15th July; 16th September; 14th October; 11th November and 2nd December.

As usual, reminders will be sent out before each date by e-mail to those registered and via the Minstead Parish Council weekly e-mail. Feel free to pass this information on to any oil users in Minstead, Lyndhurst, Bank, Bartley, Winsor and places nearby!
