 GRIT BINS

Grit Bins, which contain mainly salt, are sited by HCC in strategic locations selected by the Parish Council for use by the community in severe and icy weather.  They are available on a self-help basis and will be refilled by HCC when requested.  HCC salt roads on a priority basis and our local roads around Minstead will only be dealt with in very severe weather once the more heavily used routes have been salted.  The best way of spreading salt is with a shovel. Large quantities are not needed for it to work as only a relatively small amount of salt is needed to lower the freezing point and “melt” the ice.  In theory, one shovel full is sufficient for 10 to 15 metres of road and while spreading it this sparingly is obviously a bit impractical it does show that not huge amounts are needed. We suggest that those who live near a grit bin might arrange amongst themselves who should spread a few shovel-fulls around when it looks necessary.   Further information can been found by visiting http://www3.hants.gov.uk/roads/weather-on-roads.htm
