BEAT REPORT

See Beat Report October 2017 for our area, Northern New Forest Heart.  It contains information about local crime incidents and useful advice about Home Security which is well worth reading.

Everyone is encouraged to sign up to Hampshire Alert if you have not already done so.  This is a free service offered by the Police which means that members can be sent relevant local alerts by text or email. These updates include incidents such as major road closures and warnings about the latest crime trends. It also allows members to reply to alerts, meaning that it is an easy way to share information or opinions with the police. It only takes a minute to sign up and you can get your family and friends to do so by following this link https://www.hampshirealert.co.uk/.

The next Beat Surgery when you can meet our local Police will be at the Village Shop from 10am on Saturday 18th November.

A31 HAMPSHIRE – WESTBOUND SAFETY BARRIER REPLACEMENT AND RESURFACING
With regard to the two road work schemes starting on Monday (see A31 WORKS NOVEMBER 2017) the timings of the A31 closures starting have been changed.

As there will be multiple teams working within the closure (resurfacing work, safety barrier replacement, asset surveys, litter picking), the team will be using a valid Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) which will allow the road to be closed from 9pm instead of 10pm.  This will allow a longer working window.  The times for the closures are currently displayed on black-on-yellow signs alongside the A31. If you have any questions, or if you’d like you know about our work please contact us on 0300 123 5000 or email info@highwaysengland.co.uk

MINSTEAD OIL

Please place your order for oil by email to minsteadoil@gmail.com by 9am on Wednesday 15th November. Mike will advise you of the company, price and delivery by e-mail when he has placed the order. Standard expected delivery is about 10 working days but this may vary with each company.

December orders must be placed by 9am on Wednesday 6th December and January orders by 10th January 2018.

ALL SAINTS CHURCH

See All Saints Notices 5th November 2017 for this week.

An Armistice Day commemorative ceremony will be held at the War Memorial at 10.45am on Saturday 11th November.

This year’s Remembrance Service in the Church will start at 10.50am on Sunday November 12th and will be followed by a wreath laying at the War Memorial on the Village Green.

FOOTWAY OPPOSITE THE OLD COURT HOUSE
Thanks are due to a member of the public who cleared the surface of the footpath of an accumulation of leaves. This will help keep the path in good condition. (The surface was renewed in 2015 by Hampshire County Council.)

HOW WE USED TO LIVE LOCAL HISTORY TALK

Tuesday 7 November 2017
The Archaeology of the Beaulieu area of the New Forest
by Frank Green, Chief Archaeologist, New Forest National Park Authority
Ranging from long past prehistoric periods through to the Cold War in the 1960s this talk on Beaulieu archaeology will also look at the structures and sites which the New Forest National Park is recording and conserving.

Armistice Day, also known as Remembrance Day, is the day which marked the end of the First World War and is now the occasion on which we can remember the fallen of both World Wars and since. At the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month the two minute silence is observed throughout the country and this year the Lyndhurst Branch of the Royal British Legion will hold a ceremony of Remembrance including a two minute silence at the Minstead War Memorial on the Green.

If you can spare just half an hour to remember and reflect please join us there at 10.50a.m a week next Saturday.

 HAMSHIRE POLICE TARGET POACHING

Hampshire Police are stepping up operations to target poaching, hare coursing and other rural crimes.
These damaging illegal activities increase during late autumn following the cutting of crops and as the hours of darkness grow.
For further details: https://www.hampshire.police.uk/news/general/police-target-poaching-and-hare-coursing/

BAD RABBIT

This is not a rural crimal (!) but a new Cyber Attack affecting Eastern Europe.

It is a Ransomware attack and will encrypt files and demand a ransom in order to get them decrypted.  So far there have been no reported attacks in the UK, but that doesn’t mean we won’t be targeted!

Bad Rabbit infects systems by popping up on computers and saying that Flash needs updating, or that you need to install Flash.  Flash is a piece of software that is installed on many computers.  It allows media such as videos and animation etc on websites to run.  From time to time updates are needed but you shouldn’t see any pop ups about it.  If you find that you get this pop up then you are strongly advised not click to install.

For further information and advice have a look at the web and see this BBC article.

Please take extra care driving in the Forest after the clocks go back on 29th October and try to allow a few extra minutes for journeys.  In particular November and December are the peak months for animal casualties so please encourage everyone you know to be cautious and vigilant when they get behind the wheel!

Hampshire Police have some useful seasonal advice about Halloween, Bonfire Night and other events which can be read by clicking here.

If you are planning to celebrate Guy Fawkes’ misdemeanours this year please bear in mind that animals and wildlife do not enjoy the whizz bangs as much as you!  In particular if your neighbours have horses do please warn them if you are going to have a firework party!

After the clocks go back the darker evenings may see an increase in attempted thefts particularly from outbuildings.  Click here for advice on keeping your home and property secure.

NUISANCE BONFIRES & GARDEN WASTE DISPOSAL

This is the regular annual request that you be considerate about when and where you have a bonfire.  It is not friendly to smoke out your neighbours and also you may be creating a health hazard.

It is perfectly ok to have the occasional bonfire to get rid of reasonable amounts of garden waste but a bit of thought and care about the time, the location and the weather conditions can minimise any unpleasant side effects and avoid upsetting your immediate neighbourhood!

Alternatively, if you have trouble disposing of garden waste then you can join the NFDC’s Garden Waste Scheme which is an easy, affordable way for New Forest residents to dispose of their garden waste.  Bags are collected once a fortnight and composted at a Hampshire facility.

Click here for further information or ring 023 8028 5000.

Or you can take garden waste to the local household waste recycling centre.

Click here for further information or ring 0845 603 5634.

Waste derived from commercial activity must not be burnt on site and should be disposed of through a licensed contractor/waste handler.

If bonfires are causing a nuisance then it is possible for an Abatement Order to be served upon the person responsible, owner or occupier of the premises (as appropriate) requiring the nuisance to be abated.  Failure to comply with an Abatement Notice is an offence and legal proceedings may result.

For further information about how to make a complaint

see Nuisance Bonfires on the NFDC website

or ring the Environmental Protection Section on 023 8028 5411.

PLANNING APPLICATION 17/00732: FORMER LYNDHURST PARK HOTEL SITE

The deadline for comments on the current application by PegasusLife for redevelopment of the former Lyndhurst Park Hotel site is next Tuesday, 17th October. This is a major development that will affect not only Lyndhurst but also surrounding areas. The more local residents who make their views known, for or against, to the New Forest National Park Authority the more likely it will be that the eventual decision fully reflects local opinion.

You can add your views (‘Object’, ‘Support’ or ‘Comment’) on-line by clicking here

and then selecting the <Comments> tab. You can download the application papers and see other peoples’ comments to date on the <Documents> tab.

Or write (if you’re quick) to Ms Clare Ings, New Forest National Park Authority, Town Hall, Avenue Road, Lymington SO41 9ZG

POLICE SURVEY

Everyone is encouraged to go online and help our local Police set their Policing Priorities. The survey takes less than 5 minutes to complete and you’ll be answering questions about what you think your local Police team should be focusing on for the next three months. Between now and October 31st they will be gathering information that will allow them to concentrate on the problems and concerns that most affect you here in the New Forest.  Just go on line using the link below and have your say, and if possible ask your friends and neighbours to complete the survey too.

                       https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/NQLKN9C

PLEASE DO NOT PUT YOUR RUBBISH BAGS OUTSIDE YOUR GATE!

There have been a growing number of rubbish bags being placed outside gates which can be injurious to livestock grazing the Forest.  Animals are attracted by food in the bags which can also contain glass, plastic and other harmful things and of course their enthusiastic attention can result in unsightly rubbish being spread around. This has recently become a particular problem in Minstead, Bank and Woodlands.

Everyone is urged to keep their rubbish within their property gates – it will still be collected!

For further information see the Village Community website and the New Forest District Council website which tell you more about rubbish collections and recycling and who to contact if you have any queries about this issue.

VILLAGE LUNCH

The first Village Lunch of the season will be held in the Trusty at 12.30pm on Tuesday 17th October and is open to all Minstead residents at a special price this year of £7.99.

Subsequent lunches will be on 21st November and 19th December.

MINSTEAD OIL

Oil orders for October should be sent to MinsteadOil by 9am on Wednesday 18th October. Delivery would be expected before 1st November but this date will depend on the company offering the best price.

Subsequent order dates for 2017 are November 15th and December 6th.

Mike Hutton will send a list of 2018 order dates round before Christmas but there will be one per month up to March then bi-monthly until monthly from September.

FLOWER SHOW SATURDAY 2ND SEPTEMBER

This year’s Show, the sixty-sixth, was another outstanding success thanks to lots of hard work by many.   There were a massive 563 entries and once again the Hall looked spectacular and the judges commented on the very high standard of all the exhibits.

The Show was opened by Minstead’s pantomime celebrity Emma Vardy who took time off from her day job as a BBC journalist and reporter to be with us.

IMG_20170902_144953

Introducing  Emma, the Flower Show Society Chairman Colin Payne thanked all the Committee for their hard work, especially those doing it for the first time.  Emma remarked on the huge amount of effort that had gone into preparing for the show, the high standard of exhibits and was impressed by the creativity from all parts of the Village community.  She was delighted to declare the Show Open!

Next year’s show will be on Saturday 1st September 2018.

FLYING THE RED ENSIGN

Merchant Navy Day on 3rd September has been commemorated since 2000 but only for the past two years has it been the focus of a nationwide campaign to raise public awareness of our ongoing reliance on seafarers and shipping.

We are flying the Red Ensign – the Red Duster as it is affectionately known – on the Village Green today in memory of all those merchant seamen who lost their lives in both World Wars and in recognition of the crucial contribution they continue to make today to the welfare and economy of our country.

To find out more visit http://www.seafarers.uk/.

SSAFA

We have received thanks from SSAFA New Forest Division for the donation following the Village Fete.  Setting aside the financial benefit, it was a very successful day in terms of getting SSAFA’s message out to people, many of whom had never previously heard of us.  To find out more about their work please visit https://www.ssafa.org.uk/.

BEAT REPORT

See Beat Report August 2017.
