 RESUSCITATION/DEFIBRILLATOR TRAINING

Many thanks to all who attended Ian Jones’ classes on Wednesday.

Further information can be found on the British Heart Foundation website.

Although there was no charge for the sessions any contributions will be most welcome and will be divided between the South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust’s charity which helps set up new AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) and the cost of the Minstead defibrillator.  If you have not already done so, please give these either to Helen Bennett, Alan Ferguson or Polly Osborne.

We will keep you posted on the progress of the Minstead defibrillator and hopefully some enjoyable fund raising events.

 ROADS

The Parish Council is in almost constant dialogue with the various authorities about the poor state of the roads and verges around the Village.  The bad weather, the various on- and off-road works and the fact that other communities also have similar problems means that getting much done to improve things at the moment is difficult.

While we shall continue to try on your behalf, it also can help if any road problem is reported by everyone who can do so by visiting the HCC website

http://www3.hants.gov.uk/roads/roadproblems.htm

or you could ponder the following Epigram by Burns sent in by one of our readers:

I’m now arrived-thanks to the gods!-
Thro’ pathways rough and muddy,
A certain sign that makin roads
Is
no this people’s study:
Altho’ Im not wi’
 Scripture cram’d,

I’m sure the Bible says
That heedless sinners shall be damn’d,
Unless they mend their ways.

 BOURNEMOUTH WATER MAINS REPLACMENT

Further to the above (!) we understand that work along the road to Newtown will start this week and that there will be road closures and diversions for those affected.  Hopefully this will not go on for more than a week!

Minstead Bell Ringers would welcome one or two new members, either with or without previous experience of ringing. Contrary to popular belief, ringing bells does not require either strength or musical ability – just enthusiasm and some commitment to practise once or twice a week. Ringing is a social activity that exercises the brain as well as the body. If you are interested please contact Peter Bennett (023 8081 2358) or Polly Osborne (023 8081 2375). We would love to hear from you!

 GRIT BINS

Grit Bins, which contain mainly salt, are sited by HCC in strategic locations selected by the Parish Council for use by the community in severe and icy weather.  They are available on a self-help basis and will be refilled by HCC when requested.  HCC salt roads on a priority basis and our local roads around Minstead will only be dealt with in very severe weather once the more heavily used routes have been salted.  The best way of spreading salt is with a shovel. Large quantities are not needed for it to work as only a relatively small amount of salt is needed to lower the freezing point and “melt” the ice.  In theory, one shovel full is sufficient for 10 to 15 metres of road and while spreading it this sparingly is obviously a bit impractical it does show that not huge amounts are needed. We suggest that those who live near a grit bin might arrange amongst themselves who should spread a few shovel-fulls around when it looks necessary.   Further information can been found by visiting http://www3.hants.gov.uk/roads/weather-on-roads.htm

We thought we should remind dog owners that strict new laws introduced in February 2015 make it compulsory for all dogs in England to be microchipped and registered from 6th April 2016.

Support from Dogs Trust (www.dogstrust.org.uk or tel 0207 837 0006), the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, means a free microchip will be available for all unchipped dogs in England.

Failure to comply may cause embarrassment at best and a £500 fine at worst!

See Government Press Release for further information.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL by CHARLES DICKENS

See CATS flyer Jan 2016 for performances of A Christmas Carol by the Copythorne Amateur Theatrical Society and the Forest School of Dance on 16th, 22nd and 23rd January 2016 in Copythorne Parish Hall.

 LIBRARY SERVICES

If you want to have your say on the future of the Hampshire Library Service you can comment on HCC’s draft library strategy which is out for public consultation until Saturday 16th January 2016. Printed copies of the questionnaire are also available in all Hampshire libraries and in mobile library vehicles.

In essence HCC states that many people access library services very differently now compared with how they used them years ago and it is seeking a clear focus for the future of the Service.  It also expects that it will need to save money in the future but that is not the only reason for change!

FATHER CHRISTMAS MAKES A RETURN VISIT

Father Christmas returned to Minstead on his sleigh on Saturday evening to give out presents to a great many children.  Everyone enjoyed seeing him as well as singing carols to live music with mulled wine and mince pies.  He thoroughly enjoyed his time in Minstead and hopes all the children got what they wanted. He plans to return again next year!

Many thanks to everyone who helped make this special occasion such a success!

His visit was followed by the annual performance by the Mummers of Minstead, led by the indefatigable Nick Mellersh!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR OIL TSAR

“As a serious success story, or alternatively a record of the problems of the oil industry, I attach a list of the prices* we have negotiated on your behalf since 2012.  Over recent months the prices have wandered down from 30p-ish and even that is unusual as the prices go up for Christmas most years.  Mind you, if anyone bought from Butler this Christmas they were probably ripped off as Butler wouldn’t even give me a price this month!

By all means share this with anyone localish and they can join by emailing minsteadoil@gmail.com.

Next orders go in for those interested by 9am on January 13th 2016

Happy Christmas to all – Mike”

*See Oil Prices to Dec 2015

And a big THANK YOU to Mike on behalf of the Community for managing Minstead Oil so brilliantly over the last few years!

 BURGLARY IN EMERY DOWN

On a less cheerful note there was a burglary recently in Emery Down that occurred in Silver Street, not far from the junction with the main village road. The property is frequently unoccupied for several days, so it is uncertain when exactly the offence took place. The culprit(s) forced a rear wooden door using some type of blunt instrument, having gained access via a side gate.  It looks as if only small items (e.g. cash/jewellery etc.) have been taken and that larger items (e.g. TV/audio equipment) have not been touched. It was noticed that some of the curtains facing the road had been closed by the perpetrator(s) during the offence, presumably to prevent anyone noticing the theft in progress.

Although it has not appeared yet as a Hampshire Alert, if you saw or know anything please contact Hampshire Police on 101.

For advice on crime prevention including advice on how to secure your home visit the Hampshire Police website.
