 PROTECTION FROM GAMEOVER ZEUS

NFDC ICT Services has made us aware of the information and advice that has been published by the National Crime Agency to combat the threat from powerful malicious software (malware). ICT Services already subscribe to measures which protect the Council’s network from vulnerabilities. However you might find the following information useful for your own personal computers.
The current threat is targeted at computers running any version of the Windows operating system, including Windows running as a virtual machine on an Apple Mac, any server running Windows and Windows embedded.  It comes from two forms of malware, known as GOZeus (also known as Gameover Zeus or P2PZeus) and CryptoLocker, both of which could cause significant damage.
National Crime Agency believes that action it has taken to combat the threat will create a unique, two week opportunity for you to check, rid and safeguard yourself from this malware.
The advice given should be applied at all times – make sure your antivirus software, and firewall, and everything else that is designed to protect you is up to date, change your passwords regularly and never click on any links/attachments that you are unsure of.
There is further guidance and a set of links to tools that will check your computer for the presence of this malware <https://www.getsafeonline.org/nca/>  published at
https://www.getsafeonline.org/news/we-have-short-time-to-beat-powerful-computer-attack/

ROAD REPAIRS

For those not already aware, Hampshire County Council is responsible for the maintenance of all roads in Minstead except for the A31 which is the responsibility of the Highways Agency. See HCC Guide 2014 for information on Highway Traffic and Transport including reporting and contact details.

Click here to report a road problem such as a pothole to Hampshire County Council.  Although the PC does its best to report all dangerous potholes in the Village, the more individual people who report them the sooner something is likely to be done to fix them.  Do try and take a photograph and if you do we suggest you put something next to it, like a bunch of keys, to give an indication of its size and depth.

SUMMER PHOTO COMPETITION

Unfortunately we had very few entries for May but many thanks to Amanda Cumming who sent in three lovely photos which can all be seen on the Village website by clicking here.

We thought the best was her photo of the first foal she saw in 2014:

baby

So come on you budding David Baileys and send some more photos in for June!

ALABAMA ROT – AN UNEXPLAINED DOG ILLNESS

Alabama rot is a disease that has been known about since the late 1980s in the USA. Since December 2012 a number of suspected and confirmed cases have been seen in counties throughout the UK. Dogs reported with the disease can suffer kidney failure and/or skin lesions. The cause of the disease remains unknown. The disease does not appear to pass from dog to dog. Although the problem is being treated very seriously, many thousands of dogs are walked in the countryside every day and it is important to remember that only a very small number of dogs have been affected.

What should you look out for in your dog?

If you notice a wound, lesion or blister on your dog’s leg or face anywhere from 0 to 7 days after walking in the New Forest area or elsewhere, then you should seek veterinary attention. This may be hard to spot but you may notice your dog licking itself more than usual. Most lesions will not be caused by this condition. Additionally, if your dog becomes quiet, starts vomiting or stops eating then please seek advice from your local vet.

TAKE PART IN THE MINSTEAD SUMMER PHOTO COMPETITION!

All who live in Minstead are invited to take part in a monthly summer photo competition.

We are looking for photos of events, activities, the countryside, the scenery and the people.

The only condition is that photos should be current and of or about Minstead and that they must be taken by a Minstead resident (of any age!).

Entries will be judged at the end of each month during the summer and selected images will be published on the website including the gallery (http://test.minstead.org.uk/gallery/).

The winner for the month will be announced in the weekly eNewsletter.

Entries should be in a suitable format for web publishing – we’d prefer JPEG format and at a maximum of 800 pixels width.  They should be sent by email to myminstead@minstead.org.uk together with the name and address of the person submitting them and a title.  Any supporting descriptive text or short article will be welcome.  It will be assumed that entrants are content for their photos to appear on http://test.minstead.org.uk/ and they should state if they do not wish their name and address to be published.

The judges’ decision will, as always, be final but we shall try to publish the best photos every month!

NUISANCE BONFIRES

Please be considerate about when and where you have a bonfire.  It is not friendly to smoke out your neighbour and you may be creating a health hazard.  There is quite enough pollution around anyway without adding to it unnecessarily!

That is not to say you should not have a bonfire, but just that a bit of thought and care about the time, the location and the weather conditions can minimise any unpleasant side-effects.

If bonfires are causing a nuisance then it is possible for an Abatement Notice to be served upon the person responsible, owner or occupier of the premises (as appropriate) requiring that the nuisance be abated.  Failure to comply with an Abatement Notice is an offence and legal proceedings may result. If found guilty of an offence of this type then the maximum fine is £5,000 for domestic premises and £20,000 for commercial premises.

For further information about how to make a complaint see Nuisance Bonfires on the NFDC website

or ring the Environmental Protection Section on 023 8028 5411.

Possible 20 MPH limit for the central village areas

Following a discussion at the Annual Parish Meeting it was decided to gauge the level of support for a reduction of the speed limit to 20mph for some areas of the village. It is hoped that a 20mph limit would give the message that our roads are used by so many different people and animals and for every user including the drivers it would make the village a much more pleasant and safer place to get around. The petition will be in the village shop for anyone to sign till just after Easter so please give it some thought and sign it if you agree that we should try to reduce the speed of the vehicles (and bicycles!)on our roads.

Many thanks to everyone who supported or helped at the concert at St Michael and All Angels church, Lyndhurst on March 22nd. A choir made up of choral singers from the New Forest, Romsey, Southampton, London, Basingstoke and Bath sang Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man, A Mass for Peace, a stunning evening performance after just one rehearsal in the afternoon. The approximate amount raised after expenses is around £2400. This amount will be shared 50% to Help for Heroes and 25% each to St Michael’s, Lyndhurst and All Saints Church, Minstead. Thanks to The Prince foundation and Costa Coffee, Lyndhurst for their generous sponsorship and the local businesses who donated raffle prizes.

(There will be a list displayed in St Michael’s of the raffle prize donors asap).

FENCE AND CATTLE GRID MAINTENANCE

The Verderers have asked New Forest residents to fully stock-proof their fences and ensure cattle grids are clear of rubbish. In the spring animals are likely to try to eat the lush grass growing in private gardens and fields which grows quicker than on the Forest. If your fence is not stock-proof you may wake up to find a herd of cows or ponies on your lawn! It is the responsibility of property owners to fence out legally depastured stock so you are advised to check your boundaries to make sure they are secure. Cattle grids also require regular attention. During the winter they often fill up with debris and that can encourage animals to try to walk across them.

 BANK CARD SCAM

For the attention of those who come into contact with elderly and vulnerable people

Elderly/vulnerable members of the public have been receiving unsolicited telephone calls from criminals purporting to be from their bank or the police. The caller states that they have spotted a fraudulent payment on their card or fraudulent activity on their account.

The caller gains the person’s trust and explains that the bank will need to collect the card, or require them to withdraw large sums of money from their account.

The victim is then advised to place their card (or money withdrawn) into an envelope to disguise its appearance.

The criminal will then arrange a courier, taxi driver or similar to call to collect the envelope.

The courier is given the address (most frequently in London but now in Hampshire) where they are met by the offender outside the address to take the envelope enclosing card or money.

The advice from Hampshire Police is if you have the slightest suspicion about a transaction of this nature, contact the Police immediately by telephoning 101 or 999 if it is an emergency. Please advise the victim that this may be a scam.
