LIBRARY SERVICES

If you want to have your say on the future of the Hampshire Library Service you can comment on HCC’s draft library strategy which is out for public consultation until Saturday 16th January 2016. Printed copies of the questionnaire are also available in all Hampshire libraries and in mobile library vehicles.

In essence HCC states that many people access library services very differently now compared with how they used them years ago and it is seeking a clear focus for the future of the Service.  It also expects that it will need to save money in the future but that is not the only reason for change!

THE MINSTEAD DEFIBRILLATOR

Many thanks to those who have volunteered for training!

There are still plenty of spaces available for more volunteers at either 4pm or 7pm on Wednesday 27th January and an additional session can be arranged if there is sufficient demand.

We are still looking for ideas for fund raising to help pay for this important piece of potentially life-saving equipment for our community.

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL

A further reminder that the FOLS Christmas Tree Festival 2015, organised by the Friends of Lyndhurst Surgery (FOLS) and the League of Friends Fenwick (LOFF) in partnership with St Michael and All Angels Church, Lyndhurst, will be take place from

Social Media ‘Friend’ Requests from Extremist Groups

Hampshire Police have been made aware by education establishments and young people in Hampshire and IOW of suspicious ‘friend’ requests being made through social media accounts; describing those making contact as being from ‘ISIS’.
Recipients of these ‘friend’ requests have reported that the names of those making contact are ‘unusual’ and have ‘funny’ symbols. It is not yet clear if these requests are specifically intended to target young people or that this is an issue being encountered by people of all ages??
In response to this information, safeguarding young and vulnerable people is the Constabulary’s priority; raising awareness of the matter both directly, and through parents, carers and relevant professionals.
Their advice to you is to make young and vulnerable people aware of this risk; speak to them, reassure them that they can speak to you, and warn them NOT to accept friend requests from ANY person they don’t know, particularly from those who appear to be linked to extremist groups.
This message is one step of a broad plan to ensure we raise awareness in order to keep young people in Hampshire and IOW informed and safe; our plan includes further investigation and ongoing communication of information as it becomes available.
If you have any concerns or require further advice, please contact us:
schoolyouthengagement@hampshire.pnn.police.uk

DON’T FEED THE PONIES!

Most in Minstead will be aware that feeding ponies human food, or even things like carrots, causes serious issues in the New Forest. Some ponies and donkeys develop an unhealthy craving for human food and can become aggressive with people which can result in them being removed from the Forest and destroyed. The animals also tend to gather near roads, looking for people with food, and this makes them more vulnerable to traffic accidents. Human food also gives the ponies colic (bad stomach ache) which is very painful.

Feeding of ponies is therefore against the byelaws – for good reason.

For further information visit the Verderers’ website, the Forestry Commission website and the National Park Authority website.
