A31 MINSTEAD CATTLE GRID IMPROVEMENTS

For the avoidance of any confusion, Kier Highways’ work to bring the current cattle grid located off the A31 up to current specification is now expected to start on Monday 8th July (not 1st July) and will take place over 5 days.

AND YET MORE ROADWORKS – A31 CLOSURE

Kier Highways will be resurfacing a section of the A31 westbound carriageway on the approach to the Picket Post junction, to ensure the network remains in a safe condition. The works are scheduled to start on Monday 8th July 2019 and should be completed by Wednesday 24th July 2019. For the safety of the workforce and users (otherwise known as customers) they will be closing the A31 westbound carriageway from junction 2 of the M27 to Poulner Hill (Ringwood) overnight between 9pm and 6am (Monday to Friday only). During the closures a signed diversion will be in place from junction 2, north on the A36 to Salisbury, then south on the A338 to join the A31 at the Ringwood Interchange. To minimise disruption to users, they will also be carrying out a second scheme within the road closure to renew road markings on the A31 westbound carriageway.

In addition to the westbound closures, Kier Highways will also be closing the A31 eastbound carriageway from the A338 Ringwood Interchange to junction 2 of the M27 to allow for road markings to be renewed on the A31 eastbound carriageway. These works are scheduled to take place overnight on Monday 1st and Tuesday 2nd July 2019. Access will be maintained for emergency services vehicles on blue light calls; and for those residents or businesses located within the closure extents. All drivers will also need to adhere to the site speed limits of 10mph and 5mph when passing plant and/or our workforce.

HAVE YOU SEEN CLOVER?

We think she’s still missing!

MINSTEAD MAIL JUNE 2019

We have resorted to emergency procedures this month to distribute printed copies of Minstead Mail!  It has been hand delivered by your Parish Councillors and Clerk who hope they have covered every household.  If you have not received one and would like one please let us know either by email to minsteadpc@gmail.com or by ringing our Clerk on 023 8081 2375 but please note that you can also read it on line by visiting the Village Community website.

A31 MINSTEAD CATTLE GRID IMPROVEMENTS

Further to last week’s notice many will have received a further letter from Highways England stating that Kier Highways’ work to bring the current cattle grid located off the A31 up to current specification is now expected to start on Monday 8th July (not 1st July) and will take place over 5 days.  Lyndhurst Road will be closed between the A31 and Seamans Corner which means no access to and from the A31 westbound at the Seamans lane junction.  Signed diversion routes will be in place.

HAMPSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL CONSULTATION – BALANCING THE BUDGET

HCC is asking for residents’ and stakeholders’ views on ways to balance its budget in response to growing demands on council services and continuing pressures on local government funding.

By April 2021 the County Council will be facing an anticipated budget shortfall of £80 million.  With less money available and growing demand for council services decisions will need to be made about what it can and cannot provide in the future.

The County Council would like to hear your views on the following options for balancing its budget as well as any alternatives you may wish to propose:

  • introducing and increasing charges for some services
  • encouraging central Government to make legislative changes
  • generating additional income
  • continuing to use the County Council’s reserves prudently
  • reducing and changing services
  • increasing Council Tax
  • changing local government arrangements in Hampshire

To find out more and complete the consultation on line visit

https://www.hants.gov.uk/balancingthebudget

You can also request an information pack and response form in Braille, audio or large print by emailing insight@hants.gov.uk or ringing 0300 555 1375.

Please not that the consultation ends on Wednesday 17th July.

HIT AND RUN IN LYNDHURST

Were you in Lyndhurst on Thursday 30th May 2019 between 12.30 and 13:00 and did you witness a hit and run incident at the exit to the public car park (ie between Pages and the Lyndhurst Working Mens Club)? A man from Minstead was hit by a car that failed to stop when leaving the car park, at the junction with the High Street, he went onto the bonnet and the car drove off without stopping. It was a small car, possibly a Mini in a light colour and may have a visible scratch on the bonnet.

If you saw anything please let us know at minsteadpc@gmail.com and/or contact the Police on 101 or visit the Hampshire Police website by clicking  HERE.

2019 IS THE 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE NATIONAL PARKS

It’s 70 years since the 1949 Act of Parliament that established the family of National Parks in England and Wales. Known as Britain’s breathing spaces, national parks are areas of spectacular landscape which are given the highest level of protection so that everyone can visit and enjoy them.

To celebrate the anniversary there is a nationwide Year of Green Action – a year-long drive to get more people from all backgrounds involved in projects to improve the natural world.

Throughout 2019 there will be events and activities across the New Forest aiming to help people connect, protect and enhance nature.

Click HERE and Year of Green Action to find out more.

KEEP YOUR DISTANCE CAMPAIGN

As many will know, New Forest organisations are calling on visitors and residents to keep their distance from the National Park’s free-roaming animals.  The animals’ owners and local organisations have come together to issue the call as concerns mount that people are putting themselves and the animals at risk by getting too close.  Click HERE to find out more and please spread the word to friends, relations and others you know who are visiting the New Forest and do not necessarily have as good an understanding of commoning and livestock as those who live here.

NEW FOREST FILM FESTIVAL 8-16 JUNE

The New Forest Film Festival is fast approaching – and there are lots of events being held across the New Forest to celebrate! From drive-in movies to quizzes, there’s something for everyone.  There are 15 community cinemas around the New Forest as well as various venues all hosting film related events. Visit https://newforestfilmfestival.com/ for further information and click HERE for details of the various events.

D-DAY AND THE CANADIAN MEMORIAL AT MOGSHADE HILL

Amongst the many other D-day 75th anniversary celebrations was a Remembrance and Rededication Service at the Canadian Memirial at Mogshade Hill on Wednesday 5th June.  A cross was erected here on 14th April 1944 by men of the 3rd Canadian Division of the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps who were stationed in the area during the build up to D-day.

The original two pine logs that were bolted together to form the Cross were replaced with New Forest oak in 1949 held together with the original bolt.  The Cross has since been replaced again using local oak and the original bolt.

On the Sunday nearest 6th June every year the New Forest Fellowship of Services holds a remembrance service at the Memorial so that future generations do not forget the Canadian presence in Hampshire in 1944.

We are still short of the total that needs to be paid by the end of this week and really do need those of you who have already pledged to pay, to do so now.

LOCAL ELECTIONS

The four-yearly, all-out, elections for New Forest District Council and Town and Parish Councils in the District will be held this Thursday 2 May 2019. Polling stations will be open from 7.00 a.m. – 10.00 p.m.

For the first time for many years there will be an election for Minstead Parish Council at Polling Station No. 17, Minstead Hall!

This will be the only election in Minstead this time, our District Councillor having already been elected unopposed.

MINSTEAD COMMUNITY SHOP

In another fund-raising effort the Minstead Community Shop opened a Pop-up café on the Village Green on Easter Saturday and Sunday.  It was a considerable success with takings over £450 for the two days, although we had significant set-up costs for our first Pop-up Café we still made a profit of around £150.  We expected improved profits going forwards.

Many, many thanks to the ladies of the village (and we think it was all ladies) for the delicious cakes and savouries that they contributed.

Thank you to all those who helped by serving at the stall, putting up Peter Bennett’s gazebo and of course all those who patronised the stall.

Most thanks go to Annabel Bruxner-Randall for a massive effort over many weeks in making it happen.

We will be running the Pop-up Café again over the next Bank Holiday weekend on Sunday, 5th May from 10.30am to 2.30pm or later.

The Working Group extends its thanks for all your ideas, support and not least patience, we shall keep you updated on our endeavours.  If you wish to contact the Working Group please use our email: minsteadcommunityshop@gmail.com or speak to any members of the working group.

COMMUNITY FIBRE BROADBAND SCHEME

We are continuing to collect contributions for the Scheme and although there is still a bit of a way to go we are making progress and have collected or had pledges for over 65% of the total needed.

Again, many thanks to all those who have supported the scheme which we continue to believe represents outstandingly good value for money for providing ultrafast broadband to most of the community.

If you still have questions about the scheme we have included a section of Frequently asked Questions on the dedicated page on the Village website https://minstead.org.uk/broadband/

This page also includes the latest “totaliser” which is updated daily so you can keep an eye on progress.

Please consider the advantages that this ultrafast connection could bring you, your family and the wider community and contact us either by emailing minsteadchairman@gmail.com or by using the online form at http://ultrafast.minstead.org.uk/ to discuss your potential participation.

ALL SAINTS CHURCH

LOCAL ELECTIONS – POSTAL VOTES

A few reminders if you are a postal voter:

  1. You must sign, and write your Date of Birth on the Postal Vote Statement (PVS). The signature must be the one with which you applied for a postal vote, and it needs your Date of Birth, NOT today’s date
  2. Then mark X’s on the Ballot Paper and seal the Ballot Paper into Envelope A.
  3. Finally put Envelope A and your completed PVS into envelope B, seal that and post it.

Community Fibre Broadband Scheme
We are hard at work collecting monies for this Scheme from those on the CFBS list, and from those generous and community-minded enough to make voluntary contributions to help bring it to fruition.
If you have already made a payment “Thank you very much”.
If not, would you consider the advantages that this Ultrafast connection could bring you, your family and the wider community and contact us either by emailing minsteadchairman@gmail.com or by using the online form at http://ultrafast.minstead.org.uk/ to discuss your potential participation?
So far we have raised only 40% of the £106,698 required to make this connection possible.

COMMUNITY SHOP QUIZ NIGHT

The Quiz Night on 13th April was attended by over 90 members of the Minstead community and raised nearly £900 pounds for its funding of a Community Shop in Minstead.  The winners were the “Fleetwood Fools”, the runners-up “The Olorenshaws”.

Very many thanks to everyone who supported the occasion.

MINSTEAD ULTRAFAST BROADBAND – PROGRESS

The Community Fibre Broadband Scheme announced at the Annual Parish Meeting on 20th March is being progressed as rapidly as possible.  The contract with Hampshire County Council was signed on 11th April which means we must have collected sufficient funds for the scheme to go ahead by 9th May.  We have written to all households who are eligible to benefit asking for firm commitments and we are now following up with house to house visits to answer any further queries.  We have also asked the wider community for support.

The background to and details of the scheme can be read by clicking HERE on the Village website.

Please let us know as soon as possible if you wish to contribute so we can progress this unique offer which will be of huge benefit to the community. The best ways of doing this are:

FRIENDS OF LYNDHURST SURGERY – ECG APPEAL

FOLS has just recently received a request from the surgery to purchase a new ECG machine, complete with attachments as necessary, as the present piece of equipment which was provided and maintained by FOLS, is now on its last stages of practical use and beyond economic repair.  It will cost FOLS around £2,500, a very large sum for such a small local charity, but so vital for the surgery and for the benefit of us all, meaning that patients can be tested at the surgery without having to attend one of our local hospitals

We have instructed the surgery to purchase the new machine to ensure there is a working ECG available to them at all times. We ask that you help us to find the additional funding necessary to purchase and maintain the device, whilst still servicing all the equipment we have already purchased

We will, of course keep you informed of our progress towards the £2,500 target through posters and information at the surgery

Please contact Davis Wilson Chair, Friends of Lyndhurst Surgery through the surgery number 023 8028 2689
