FLOWER, FRUIT AND VEGETABLE SHOW

SAT 7TH SEPTEMBER

A huge “Thank You” to all those who organised this year’s Show which was another outstanding success.  It took a lot of hard work by many people and we all owe a great debt of gratitude to everyone on the Flower Show Society Committee. In particular we thank the Chairman, Colin Payne who is stepping down after more years than he cares to remember and the Honorary Treasurer Tim Holt who has decided the time is right to hand over responsibility for all those little brown envelopes!

This year’s show was opened by Paul Glover whose great grandfather started the original show before Paul can remember.  There were in excess of 440 entries with a very high standard in all classes so well done everyone and congratulations to the winners!!

A great many visitors enjoyed looking at the exhibits and also the excellent teas provided by the hard working team in the hall kitchen.

Please note that the Society’s AGM will be held in the Congleton Room on 3rd December and everyone is welcome to attend to give support.  Any specific suggestions should be sent to the Secretary Jo Instrall at joinstrall@gmail.com at least two weeks prior to the meeting.

WOW (Women on Wednesdays) WEDNESDAY 11TH SEPTEMBER

BROADBAND IN MINSTEAD

Update 6th September 2019

Thank you all for being so patient and we hope that this update will bring some encouragement.

You will have seen that Openreach and their contractors have been busy installing fibre for the Cadnam V35 (Minstead Wave2) part of their network, and we can say that effective connections have been made to and from the central distribution point in the middle of the village.

We have heard today that at least one Wave 2 customer has been offered FTTP as an option for their broadband so it looks as though some people could be live now.

Our information is that maybe as much as 40% of V35 (Wave2) structure could have already been upgraded to this stage, but we do not yet have an expected date for completion of the remaining 60%.

When, or if, we are notified of the addresses of the 40% that have gone live we shall let you know.

Our information regarding the Community Fibre Braodband Scheme is that “Openreach is working on the deployment plan and there may be some more news on this shortly.

We hope that this information and evidence of progress is encouraging.

FOR 4G BROADBAND USERS – UNLIMITED PLANS NOW AVAILABLE

For those of you in Minstead using 4G dongles for home broadband (while we await fibre!) some providers are now offering unlimited data plans which work well in Minstead. For example, Vodafone and EE. Note that some of these plans come with hidden speed limitations – for example – the Vodafone Unlimited plan comes with a 10mbps limit where as the more expensive Unlimited Max plan offers the fastest speed available. You should also ensure these plans are compatible with your dongle.

THE NEW FOREST MARATHON 8th SEPTEMBER

It’s the New Forest Marathon this Sunday and that means some road closures, though not in our area. The link below has lots of very useful information that will help if you are out and about in the Forest on Sunday.
https://www.newforestmarathon.co.uk/residents-information/

ROADS MAINTENANCE

The Parish Council does its best to report all road problems in Minstead to Hampshire County Council using the online reporting system and by direct contact.

We are very aware that the state of our roads is poor and have shown the worst areas to HCC engineers.

If you notice any particular problems please report these on line by visiting

https://www.hants.gov.uk/transport/roadmaintenance

and choosing the heading that best suits the situation.

If reported online HCC have to assess the problem, and the more people that report it, the greater the likelihood of something being done though no guarantees are given!

A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY – 2nd NOVEMBER

A Service will be held on 2nd November in Minstead Church at 12.00 to remember Malcolm McCarraher and to inter his ashes in the Churchyard.  Janet would like as many of you as remember Malcolm and her in the Village to come to join in the service and afterwards to meet in the Village Hall for lunch.

Please let Janet know if you would like to come by emailing to eugeniemcc@gmail.com so she can get a rough idea of numbers from the Village for catering.

She says:

“You see we still remember you in Minstead as we never changed our email!”

MERCHANT NAVY DAY TUESDAY 3RD SEPTEMBER

We managed to hoist the Red Ensign on Merchant Navy Day

A Historical Note

Merchant seamen crewed the ships of the British Merchant Navy which kept the United Kingdom supplied with raw materials, arms, ammunition, fuel, food and all of the necessities of a nation at war throughout World War II – literally enabling the country to defend itself. In doing this, they sustained a considerably greater casualty rate than almost every other branch of the armed services and suffered great hardship. Seamen were aged from fourteen through to their late seventies.

The office of the Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen calculated that 144,000 merchant seamen were serving aboard British registered merchant ships at the outbreak of World War II and that up to 185,000 men and women served in the Merchant Navy during the war.  36,749 seamen and women were lost to enemy action, 5,720 were taken prisoner and 4,707 were wounded, totalling 47,176 casualties, a minimum casualty rate of over 25 percent.

TRUSTY SERVANT VACANCY

The Trusty has a vacancy for a part time weekend house keeper with added holiday cover.  Please call The Trusty Servant (023 8081 2137) or pop in for a chat for further information.

MINSTEAD COMMUNITY SHOP SHARES ISSUE

There has been slower progress this week towards our target of £25,000, only £1,000 added to the contributions.  Thank you to those 4 generous contributors!  So progress has slackened with only 3 weeks to go and if you are thinking about making a contribution now would be a great time.

MERCHANT NAVY DAY TUESDAY 3RD SEPTEMBER

Do join us on the Green at 9am this Tuesday 3rd September when we shall be flying the Red Ensign to honour the brave men and women who kept our ‘island nation’ afloat during both World Wars, and to celebrate our dependence on modern day merchant seafarers who are responsible for 95% of the UK’s imports, including half the food we eat, plenty of the fuel we burn and virtually all the products and goods we take for granted!

ROADWORKS 1 FURZEY LANE TO CLOSE 2-4 SEPTEMBER

Please note from the map below taken from www.roadworks.org that it looks as if Furzey Lane will be closed from 2nd to 4th September, possibly for fencing work. Hampshire Highways have confirmed there will be diversions put in place on the road closure and that the work should only take 3 hours.  The diversion route will be via the Study Centre, School Lane.

ROADWORKS 2 A337

We have received the following information about work along the A337:

Carriageway resurfacing work will take place to Romsey Road (A337) from Wellands Road to just north of Hampshire Police Station between 3 and 20 September.

The works will be carried out in two phases:

From 3 September for 10 days, between the hours of 09.30 – 16.00, pre-resurfacing works will be carried out using two-way traffic lights. No work will take place over the weekend.

From 16 September for 4 nights, between the hours of 20.00-06.00, the road will be closed for resurfacing. The road will be open during the day.

These timescales are weather dependent. Any significant changes to the schedule will be added to the yellow sign boards on the roadside. Vehicle access to properties in the area of the works cannot be guaranteed during the works, however pedestrian access will always be available.

For further information or to report a problem you can contact Hampshire Highways on 0300 555 1388.

Well, that’s got September off to a good start hasn’t it?

The Parish Council is informed sometimes (but not always) by the relevant Authority (e.g. Highways England, HCC), rumour and jungle drums about details of impending roadworks in our area.  When we receive such information we will pass it on via this weekly eNewsletter, via a special email if appropriate and on Facebook.  Other sources of roadworks information can be found by visiting https://roadworks.org/.

PICNIC & MUSIC AT THE MANOR

A great event to raise funds for the community shop and the Teen Challenge charity took place on Sunday 18th August.  In the lovely setting on Minstead Manor, thanks to Len & Heather Brown for allowing the use of their beautiful garden, a wide range of music was played for our entertainment.

Many thanks to all the musicians who donated their talents on the day.  They were mostly from the Social Club Open Mic evenings, as well as local contributions from BOBS and others.  With a guest appearance from Goodnight Night Sweethearts singing Andrews Sisters songs from WWII.

The weather was kind to us and everybody who was there enjoyed it immensely.  Tickets sales raised £510 giving a net profit of £280 to be shared by the Community Shop and Teen Challenge

Many thanks to Jo Vardy for coming up with the idea and organising musicians, sound system and vital signposting to the Manor on the day.

Thank you to all those who came; many suggesting it should become an annual Minstead event.

The Pop-up Café has been in action again this weekend – see above – so many thanks to all who contributed!

MINSTEAD COMMUNITY SHOP SHARES ISSUE

As already announced, the Minstead Community Shop (MCS Ltd) is issuing shares to raise money to open the Community Shop.  The Committee of MCS Ltd has set a date of 30th September to reach its target of £25,000 from share sales.  Meeting the target by that date will allow us to start refurbishing the room in the Trusty Servant as soon as the lease is agreed, which we expect to be in early October.  The sooner we start refurbishing; the sooner the shop will be open.

Please join the Minstead Community Shop Society by buying shares as this is the only way to make the community shop a reality.

There are a number of documents on the shop webpage on the Minstead website (www:/minstead.org.uk/village-community-shop-project/) for you to look at.  This also shows the latest weekly totaliser so you can see how we are getting on.

If you pay for your share by direct payment into the shop’s bank account don’t forget to send the application form to the address at the end or email it to the address below.  We need to register you as a member.

If you have any queries not answered by these documents please contact the committee through our email: minsteadcommunityshop@gmail.com.

Best Vegan Cake: Sally Mollett

Best Overall Cake: Sally Mollett

The My Minstead Showstopper Winner: Michelle Haworth

DOG POO ON FOOTPATHS

There is an increasing amount of dog poo being left on our footpaths.  This is not nice for walkers and very unpleasant for our Lengthsman who keeps our footpaths clear.

RAGWORT

There is still quite a bit of Ragwort around the village which, as everyone knows, is extremely harmful to forest animals.

It looks like this…..

If you see any near your property or anywhere else in the village please pull it up and dispose of it with normal garden waste or rubbish. If you can’t manage it please let us know and we’ll try and get someone over to do it for you. If you are pulling it a fork helps and you are advised to wear gloves and also a hi-vis vest if you are walking along road verges.

The animals and the commoners will be very grateful!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE TEA TENT!

For the tea tent we need volunteers to cover the Teas, Refreshments and Rest Area by:

and/or

  1. Helping during the Fete, on a rota basis, with the provision of Teas and looking after the Rest Area. It worked quite well last year with people dipping in and out of both jobs and generally being versatile.

We look forward to hearing from you, hope that you can assist and would welcome the involvement from any new residents.

Please be kind enough to let any of us know if you are able to help:

Sylvia Dibben         Sylvia@dibben.net                     02380 812967

RAGWORT

As posted on Facebook recently, it’s that time of year again!  As last year there does not seem to be much ragwort around but as we all know it is still extremely harmful to animals if eaten so we encourage everybody to pull up/dig up any you find in your neighbourhood and dispose of it by burning or in your black bag.

Do be careful to wear protective gloves and hi-vis jackets if you are out on the road.

This photo of ragwort was taken in South Island New Zealand where it is believed to have been introduced by some well meaning Victorians either by accident or even on purpose – so it travels well and can get anywhere!

AN IMPORTANT DATE FOR YOUR DIARY
