 QUEENS BIRTHDAY BEACON

Beacon

Lots of people enjoyed a fantastic beacon on Thursday night in celebration of Her Majesty’s 90th birthday.

Many thanks to the Beacon builders and tenders –  Wilmour Biddlecombe, Lee Byford and Mike Abbott, especially for looking after it during the night.

EU REFERENDUM – MINSTEAD’S “QUESTION TIME”

EU Question Time

The Hall was filled to maximum capacity on Friday evening to hear Sir Vince Cable and Daniel Hannan MEP put the case respectively for Remaining and Leaving the EU and there was a great deal of interest.  Time prevented all questions being asked but many aspects of the issue were covered.

Congratulations to George Dibben and all his helpers for organising such a thought provoking and interesting occasion and to Sir John de Trafford for doing such an excellent job as Chairman for the evening.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PCSO

Dan Carlin has sent a message saying that it is with great regret that he is moving on from the Lyndhurst/Minstead/Bramshaw area. He has thoroughly enjoyed his 6 months here and would like to thank everyone for making him feel welcome and part of the community. He will be replaced by PC Steve Norris and PCSO Richard Williams, who will introduce themselves to us over the next couple of weeks.

FLOWER SHOW – CHILDRENS’ POTATOES AND ONION SETS

A further reminder that Potatoes and Onion sets for children under 15 years to grow for this year’s Flower, Fruit and Vegetable Show can still be collected.

Please contact Steve Cattell on 023 8081 3574 or 07732 306406 to arrange collection from next Friday 29th April.

(Whoever rang Steve last week is asked to contact him again, he has three potatoes reserved for you!)

 TIP OF THE WEEK

First Responders and the Ambulance Service advise that the following would make it much easier for them to find a house in an emergency:

  1. When you ring 999 if you have changed your house name in the last year please tell the ambulance service the previous name.
    2. If it is the middle of the night put as many lights on in the house as possible.
    3. Put the house name where it can be seen easily from the road as in the forest many roads do not have names.

 VEHICLE EXCISE LICENSING

It used to be easy to check if a vehicle was properly taxed by inspecting its Tax Disc.  The new on line system makes this less obvious.

HOW WE USED TO LIVE – TUESDAY 5 APRIL AT 7.30PM

Our next talk is entitled ‘Lyndhurst Working Men’s Club- and the local gentry who funded its establishment’ and will be given by Bill Smith.  Bill has lived in Lyndhurst all his life and is an amusing and accomplished speaker.  His interest in the history of the Working Men’s Club was sparked by his discovery of old minute books which were due to be put in the dustbin – he recognised that this was local history which should be preserved.  Bill was born in The Fenwick and attended Lyndhurst Primary School before continuing his education in Bartley.  His talk will also include his memories of Lyndhurst as it has changed in his lifetime and stories of local people.  It should be a good evening.

Emery Down and Bank Village Hall, entry £3 on the door.  Refreshments available.

See 2015-2016 Annual Report HWUTL for the annual report of How We Used To Live.

PLEASE CARE FOR OUR VERGES!

Village verges are under attack from all sides, particularly when they are wet.

They are damaged by being driven on and over and further eroded by being parked on.

Recently some building work has resulted in this sort of damage, as has the work by two utilities through the village.

Your PC is seeking restitution work from these utilities for such damage that we can identify is theirs. This task is made more difficult if we do damage to them ourselves.

Please could we ask all local road users to care for our verges as if they were your own grass areas or lawns – do you drive on those, especially when they are wet or soft?

Recently some building work has resulted in this sort of damage, as has the work by two utilities through the village.

Your PC is seeking restitution work from these utilities for such damage that we can identify is theirs. This task is made more difficult if we do damage to them ourselves.

Please could we ask all local road users to care for our verges as if they were your own grass areas or lawns – do you drive on those, especially when they are wet or soft?

We will ask the Hall Management among others to include this request in their booking conditions, and to more clearly point out the location of the Hall’s large carpark for users.

 MALICIOUS EMAILS

NFDC (ICT) has recently seen a sudden increase in the number of malicious emails and would like to remind everyone to be extra vigilant when dealing with emails. You may have seen the recent news stories about ransomware attacks. This is where a third party introduces a piece of software to a machine, (which can then spread to a network), that encrypts the data contained on the machine. Payment is then demanded to provide a decryption key to unencrypt the machine, without which, the data is unusable.  The easiest way for a file like this to be introduced to a machine is either directly attached to an email, from a link contained in an email, or from a file downloaded from a compromised website. NFDC  has seen an increase in emails received with subjects relating to “Invoice” and “Important Message” which have malicious files attached and/or links in the email.  Please be aware of what you are clicking on before you open anything.
In addition to this, NFDC is seeing a lot of hijacked and spoofed email accounts sending emails in to us.  This means that just because an email looks like it is from somebody you know, it may not have been them who sent it, but instead somebody using methods to make it appear that way.
In summary, please can you ensure that you:
·         Do not download files from untrusted locations on the internet
·         Do not open attachments on emails unless you believe it actually originated from the sender or are expecting the attachment
·         Do not respond to any emails which claim to be from NFDC ICT and are requesting usernames or passwords.  ICT will never ask for this information by email.
If in doubt, please contact NFDC ICT Security or the ICT Service Desk.

Warning over scam to Careline customers
New Forest District Council is warning its Appletree Careline community alarm customers to be aware of a scam where a caller falsely claims the alarm service is being taken over before asking for bank details.
Two Appletree Careline customers have contacted the Council after being approached by a company claiming to be taking over Appletree Careline.
NFDC is working with Trading Standards and is advising customers that this takeover claim is not the case and not to give any bank details or part with any money.
Anyone who is concerned can contact Trading Standards on 01962 833620 / tsadvice@hants.gov.uk<mailto:tsadvice@hants.gov.uk>.

How We Used To Live Tuesday 1 March 2016 at 7.30pm

Bank and Emery Down Village Hall
Victorian Lymington – What did the Victorians do for us? by Angela Trend.  Discover what the Victorians did for this quiet waterside town once dependent on the sea, salt and smuggling.  There is only one obvious Victorian building in the High Street where forest ponies, pigs and cattle roamed freely among the market stalls.  Sheep and cows were driven down the High Street bound for Mr Topps slaughter house or the Isle of Wight ferry.  Fairs were held twice a year in the High Street and the circus elephants paraded through the town.  Why were several new churches and schools built?  What was the Blind House?
Angela, a founder member of How We Used To Live, is a well-known local historian and has recently completed an exhaustive year researching for an exhibition and numerous talks on the life of Arthur Phillip. She is currently
preparing an exhibition for families on Alice and the Alice books; she continues her role as a Lymington guide.
Entry £3 on the door; refreshments available.
