SOCIAL MEDIA ‘FRIEND’ REQUESTS FROM EXTREMIST GROUPS – UPDATE

Further enquiries have revealed that the male adults who made contact on Facebook are probably not ISIS members.  However the advice to schools, parents and teachers to be aware of social media and internet dangers remains.

Hampshire Police has a web page called Safe4Me, which contains resources with which teachers can reinforce this message in school.

Additionally, click here for information about how Hampshire Constabulary and local authorities are working with partner agencies and the public to stop people from becoming or supporting terrorists. It also explains how the public can help us build stronger, safer communities who can reject terrorism in all its forms.

If you have any concerns or require further advice, please contact Hampshire Police at: schoolyouthengagement@hampshire.pnn.police.uk

LIBRARY SERVICES

If you want to have your say on the future of the Hampshire Library Service you can comment on HCC’s draft library strategy which is out for public consultation until Saturday 16th January 2016. Printed copies of the questionnaire are also available in all Hampshire libraries and in mobile library vehicles.

In essence HCC states that many people access library services very differently now compared with how they used them years ago and it is seeking a clear focus for the future of the Service.  It also expects that it will need to save money in the future but that is not the only reason for change!

THE MINSTEAD DEFIBRILLATOR

Many thanks to those who have volunteered for training!

There are still plenty of spaces available for more volunteers at either 4pm or 7pm on Wednesday 27th January and an additional session can be arranged if there is sufficient demand.

We are still looking for ideas for fund raising to help pay for this important piece of potentially life-saving equipment for our community.

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL

A further reminder that the FOLS Christmas Tree Festival 2015, organised by the Friends of Lyndhurst Surgery (FOLS) and the League of Friends Fenwick (LOFF) in partnership with St Michael and All Angels Church, Lyndhurst, will be take place from

Thursday 10th December to Saturday 12th December

(open from 10.30 to 6.00 daily)

This year it is something almost entirely different with a new more flexible format with supporting entertainments and is open to all the community.  Please consider supporting these very worthwhile charities which benefit us all.

Click on the above link for further details and contact Mrs Sylvia Dibben, Ivy Cottage Farm Minstead, Lyndhurst, SO43 7FY Tel: 023 8081 2967 Email: sylvia@dibben.net if you want to know more.

TRUSTY SERVANT

Exclusive Christmas Room offer for locals!

If you do not have room for your whole family to stay, the Trusty is offering an exclusive room offer over the festive two days:

£50 per night per room (excludes breakfast) – must be a two night stay over Christmas Eve and Christmas day.

Contact the Trusty on 8081 2137 for further details.

For other events and news visit the Trusty website.

Please note that the Trusty will be open for lunch on Christmas Day (only 2 tables left) and Boxing Day but closed from 5pm.

 CAROLS ON THE GREEN

A heads up that Father Christmas will be visiting us again on Saturday 19th December during Carols on the Green from 6pm.

Parents can hand in clearly marked presents for their children to the Trusty in advance and no later than midday.

 MINSTEAD ALL SAINTS

There are no Benefice notices available this week, however here are some of the All Saints notices…

Sunday 29th November –  10.30, Five Candles Service.

Christmas Shoeboxes – Friends, family, community and church managed to fill 43 shoeboxes!  They have now begun their journey to give 43 children in need a happier Christmas.  “Well done” and “thanks” to everyone who contributed.

Saturday 5th December 10am, CTog event in Lyndhurst Youth Club as part of Lyndhurst Fun Day.  Refreshments needed.  Visitors from all churches welcome to come and help spread the word!

For other week’s notices etc see the Benefice website. Follow All Saints’ activities on Facebook and/or sign up for Church Notices.

Social Media ‘Friend’ Requests from Extremist Groups

Hampshire Police have been made aware by education establishments and young people in Hampshire and IOW of suspicious ‘friend’ requests being made through social media accounts; describing those making contact as being from ‘ISIS’.
Recipients of these ‘friend’ requests have reported that the names of those making contact are ‘unusual’ and have ‘funny’ symbols. It is not yet clear if these requests are specifically intended to target young people or that this is an issue being encountered by people of all ages??
In response to this information, safeguarding young and vulnerable people is the Constabulary’s priority; raising awareness of the matter both directly, and through parents, carers and relevant professionals.
Their advice to you is to make young and vulnerable people aware of this risk; speak to them, reassure them that they can speak to you, and warn them NOT to accept friend requests from ANY person they don’t know, particularly from those who appear to be linked to extremist groups.
This message is one step of a broad plan to ensure we raise awareness in order to keep young people in Hampshire and IOW informed and safe; our plan includes further investigation and ongoing communication of information as it becomes available.
If you have any concerns or require further advice, please contact us:
schoolyouthengagement@hampshire.pnn.police.uk
Alternatively, click here to visit the Hampshire Police Prevent Advice Page.

DON’T FEED THE PONIES!

Most in Minstead will be aware that feeding ponies human food, or even things like carrots, causes serious issues in the New Forest. Some ponies and donkeys develop an unhealthy craving for human food and can become aggressive with people which can result in them being removed from the Forest and destroyed. The animals also tend to gather near roads, looking for people with food, and this makes them more vulnerable to traffic accidents. Human food also gives the ponies colic (bad stomach ache) which is very painful.

Feeding of ponies is therefore against the byelaws – for good reason.

For further information visit the Verderers’ website, the Forestry Commission website and the National Park Authority website.

upheaval that left an indelible mark, not least on our community here in the
Forest.

 WATER MAIN REPLACEMENT WORK

From 4th January 2016 Bournemouth Water will be undertaking work to several existing water mains that are in poor condition in the Minstead area. Hence all the blue marks on some of our roads!

The extent of the proposed works will be from the junction of Lyndhurst Road and Seaman’s Lane down to Upcerne in Lyndhurst Road; also from the junction of Lyndhurst Road down Newtown Road to adjacent to Minstead Study Centre. They also plan to replace a small section of pipe in Congleton Close.

See attached email, map and guidelines for further information

NEWTOWN TELEPHONE BOX

Many thanks to those who made suggestions regarding possible uses for the Newtown Telephone Box which the Parish Council discussed at its recent meeting on 2nd November.

It is proposed that the box be renamed

The Minstead Time Machine

and that it is used by our various Village organisations for displays with themes about themselves, the past, the present and perhaps even the future!

Each display would last for approximately 3 months and we are looking for ideas so we can put together a programme starting at a sensible time next year.

All proposals should be sent to minsteadpc@googlemail.com.

WARNING ABOUT POSSIBLE COUNCIL TAX SCAMS

The Valuation Office Agency is warning Council Tax payers about individuals and companies that may be operating in the New Forest Area.  They may telephone you or appear personally at your door and try and persuade you that you are in the wrong Council Tax band and use various tactics to get you to part with your money.  NFDC has been told about customers who have recently been contacted by companies calling themselves Council Tax Claims Ltd and Council Tax Review Service. The following link tells you more about what can happen, how you can avoid falling a victim and things you really should not do:

http://www.newforest.gov.uk/article/16558/Warning-about-Council-Tax-scams

If in doubt contact the NFDC Council Tax office in working hours on 01590 646111 or the Valuation Office Agency on 03000 501501

ANNOUNCEMENTS

It has been suggested that it might be appropriate to place a short announcement in our quarterly Minstead Mail about any Village resident who has passed away in the previous 3-6 months.  Obviously this would be a matter for the next of kin but if anyone would like this please contact minsteadpc@googlemail.com with the details.

 MINSTEAD MAKERS

CRIME PREVENTION ADVICE – DON’T TEMPT THIEVES

It may be worth giving some thought to your home security following the clocks changing. In the winter the lack of lights on in a house during the darker evenings can indicate that no one is home – attracting an opportunist burglar to look further for insecurities to enter the property. Leaving a light on while you are out and shutting the curtains helps to make a home look occupied. Timer switches can be used to turn lights on in dark evenings before you return from work.

Further general crime prevention advice can be found on Hampshire Constabulary’s website to help you protect your home adequately.

Do you leave your valuables in your car? Do you think
they’re safe, and it won’t happen to you? Don’t risk it! The Police advise
you to remove all items from your car, whether it is parked up at home, in the
Forest car parks or on the road. Day or night, don’t leave valuables in your
car. Hiding it is not enough. Take everything out and don’t tempt thieves!

MINSTEAD SUPERFAST BROADBAND

We have heard that some residents may have have been sold Superfast Broadband without a suitable connection being available, and their resultant internet connection is worse or completely broken. If you are presently receiving 2-3Mb or less on the old ADSL connection it is unlikely that the present Superfast provision will benefit you.

Remember that you must be within approximately 1.2km cable length from the active Superfast cabinet and return a positive benefit in this test, using the FTTC Range B result.

Some providers have advised that if quoted FTTC speeds on that BT speed checker (link above) are less than 10Mb then do not upgrade as ADSL may still be better.

For those outside of FTTC range who require faster speeds we suggest 4G as probably the most effective current option. It is being used by 10+ residents already. See this article on the Minstead Village community website.

Waves 2/3 of the Superfast programme should reach many more residences but they are not expected to be implemented for some time yet.

TELEPHONE BOX AT NEWTOWN

The telephone box at Newtown has recently been re-painted and now that the phone has been removed the Parish Council is looking for suggestions for how it might be used to benefit the community.

If you have an idea please email us at minsteadpc@googlemail.com.

DEFIBRILLATOR

Many thanks to those who have volunteered for resuscitation training (including the use of a defibrillator).  This is likely to take place in January in the Village Hall (Green Room) and further details will be promulgated nearer the time.  Meanwhile, anyone else who wishes to be included can let us know at minsteadpc@googlemail.com at any time – there is no limit on numbers!

We are still looking for ideas for fund raising and all suggestions will be gratefully received!  Please contact us as above or speak to any Parish Councillor or the Clerk.

POTHOLE REPORTING

As mentioned in Minstead Mail, the Parish Council is acutely aware of the poor state of our roads and the increasing number of potholes and deteriorating road edges which have the potential to damage vehicles and tyres. It helps a lot if as many people as possible report these to the authorities.

You can do this by either:

  1. informing Hampshire County Council directly via http://www3.hants.gov.uk/roadproblems or
  2. by reporting it to New Forest District Council via the New Forest In Touch app which is a handy and easy to use way for reporting all sorts of problems as well as finding out information from our local council.

 ANIMAL ACCIDENTS

The Parish Council, ably assisted by our New Forest District Councillor, has looked at the number of animal accidents on the C17 following a suggestion that a sign be put up to inform drivers of how many there have been.  Over the last 7 years there have been 5 animal accidents on the C17 which is considerably less than the average across the Forest where a third of accidents occur on just three roads (B3078, B3054, B3056).  The Parish Council has concluded that at present there is not a case for a sign on the C17.

 CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL

Please have a look at FOLS Christmas Tree Festival 2015 invitation from the Friends of Lyndhurst Surgery (FOLS) and the League of Friends Fenwick (LOFF) in partnership with

St Michael and All Angels Church, Lyndhurst.

This year it is something almost entirely different with a new more flexible format with supporting entertainments and is open to all the community.  Please consider supporting these very worthwhile charities which benefit us all.

BRAMSHAW RIDING FOR DISABLED BAZAAR 19TH NOV

The annual Christmas bazaar will be held at Lyndhurst Community Centre from 10am to 3pm on Thursday 19th November.

Entry £1, light refreshements available

Great and unique ideas for Christmas, clothes, jewellery, accessories, cards and much more.

For all enquiries phone Mary on 01425 473939 or email marylizhyde@gmail.com.

The third New Forest Walking Festival takes place from 17 October to 1 November this year, with 80 guided walks to help people learn more about the New Forest. It includes walks from groups including the NFA, Forestry Commission, Wildlife Trust and the Ramblers.

MINSTEAD TO GET ITS OWN DEFIBRILLATOR!

Additional funds will be needed………..

Following a positive consultation with parishioners the Parish Council has agreed to support a defibrillator being placed centrally in the village. This will be part funded by a generous donation by our local County Councillor and it is hoped that the remaining funds needed (approximately £2000) will be raised locally.  The Parish Council will be considering how best to achieve this but if you wish to make a donation in support or have suggestions for fund raising please email minsteadpc@googlemail.com or contact the Clerk or any Parish Councillor.

……………and training of volunteers will be essential!

It will important for everyone to realise that while a defibrillator can be a life-saver it is not a substitute for ringing 999 and carrying out basic resuscitation procedures in the case of collapse or sudden cardiac arrest. The Parish Council will arrange for training sessions for basic diagnosis and resuscitation as well as in the use of a defibrillator.  If you are interested in attending a training session, which will last for about 1.5 hours, please email minsteadpc@googlemail.com or inform the Clerk or any Parish Councillor by 15th October 2015.
