FIREARMS SECURITY

Protect your firearm, protect your sport

According to the police, on average 475 firearms are stolen each year in England and Wales. Although the level of theft is very low compared with the 1,800,000-plus legally held firearms and shotguns, one firearm in the wrong hands is one too many. Recently BASC has been working with the National Crime Agency (NCA) and the police to draw up new advice on protecting firearms from theft. This advice is now published on the BASC website.

The advice, “Protect Your Firearm, Protect Your Sport”, covers storage and transportation of shotguns and firearms and how to keep vigilant when out and about. It also shows the steps that can be taken to avoid being targeted via social media.

The advice has been produced as part of a national initiative to reduce the chances of theft of firearms. It is available to download here: http://bit.ly/1KBfz8s

HITTING THE COLD SPOTS

Thanks to funding from its Rural Development fund, HCC is offering extra support to tackle fuel poverty in the rural areas of Hampshire.  As well as the standard level of support available through Hitting the Cold Spots, HCC recognises that those residents living in the rural areas of Hampshire can face added challenges.   Hitting the Cold Spots can help individuals and families throughout the Hampshire County Council area with practical support and detailed advice including visits from skilled Advisors.  This can lead to the provision of emergency heating, access to funding for repairs and replacement heating or hot water systems as well as small grants to help cope with winter emergencies. Hitting the Cold Spots will also provide practical support with debt, financial advice and benefits as well as assistance with switching energy providers.  For further information see  www.hants.gov.uk/cold-spots and for advice contact the Hitting the Cold Spots Advisor on Freephone 0800 804 8601or email staywarm@environmentcentre.com

HAMPSHIRE POLICE BUDGET

Simon Hayes, Police and Crime Commissioner for Hampshire, is inviting members of the public across Hampshire and Isle of Wight to have their say on the level of council tax precept for the policing budget in 2015/16.
The Commissioner is proposing a nominal increase of 1.99 percent. For an average Band D household, this equates to a rise of just £3.07 per annum (or 26p per month, or 6p per week) from £154.26 to £157.33. This increase would generate an additional £2 million for 2015/16, which is the cost of employing 43 police officers.
The increase proposed is within the 2% cap that has been placed on precept rises by central Government. To exceed this cap would require the conduct of a referendum, the costs of which would divert funding from front line policing, and this is not therefore something that the Commissioner is proposing. However, the Commissioner is still interested to hear from the people of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight as to whether, in principle, you would support an increase which was greater than the 2% cap, in the event that it were to be possible to invest all of this in front line policing. For example, if the precept was increased by 2.99%, the additional £1m generated would equate to around an additional 20 police officers.
The Government cap on precept rises in recent years has left a significant shortfall in funding. With 33 percent of the total policing budget coming from the council tax precept, and with Government continuing to dramatically reduce police funding, the proposed increase will help to partially address that shortfall.

To express your opinion, please complete a short survey at http://bit.ly/1vIIlsN, email pcc.consultation@hampshire.pnn.police.uk, or FREEPOST your response to: Business Reply Plus, Licence Number RTGX-KSAA-AHBB, Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, St Georges Chambers, St Georges Street, Winchester, SO23 8AJ
The results of the consultation will be presented to the Police and Crime Panel when they meet to review the proposed precept at their meeting on Friday, January 23rd 2015.

MINSTEAD ALL SAINTS

For the week’s Notices, details of Services and other events see the Benefice website and follow All Saints activities on Facebook.

Revd Cyril Payne died on December 27th last year.  He was 88 and had been in Belmore Lodge retirement home at Lymington for two years.  In the mid 1990’s Cyril was sent to All Saints’ Minstead as priest in charge and stayed for nearly two years.  During this period he brought great healing after a difficult time for All Saints. He was much loved in this parish.  The Thanksgiving service for Cyril will be on Monday 12th January at 2.30pm at St Thomas’s, Lymington. If you would like to know the address of Shelah, his widow, please contact one of the churchwardens:

Isabel  Yeo (02380 282724 isabel@yeo-family.org.uk)

Elizabeth Randall (02380 811115 elizrandall@btinternet.com)

 ICY ROADS

The recent cold spell caused ice to form in some places on our roads and at least one incident when a vehicle overturned (thankfully, no serious injuries).  The Parish Council has urged HCC and local property owners frequently over several years to clear ditches, culverts, drains, bunnies etc to try and reduce the places where water spills out on to our roads in wet weather, with the potential to freeze in cold weather but there remain many places where this still occurs.  Grit bins are located near most of the more hazardous places but as their precise positions are subject to approval by the Verderers they are not always in the best place. If you live near one and have a few minutes to spare then spreading a bit of grit around in freezing conditions would make our roads safer and help you warm up!

Meanwhile, everyone is warned to be extremely careful when driving, riding or walking along our roads in freezing conditions.

VIDEO OF THE MUMMERS

A video of the Minstead Mummer’s performance at the Trusty Servant on 20TH December is being put together.  If you have any video recordings or photos of the performance, Nick Mellersh would love to have them to improve the video. Any video shot, however short, or any still photo however blurred, would be really useful.  Please contact Nick on 02380 8112651 or via email at nandjmellersh@yahoo.co.uk.

 MINSTEAD OIL

From now on, all requests for oil made to Minstead Oil will be accepted as firm orders UNLESS you specify that you wish to be advised of price, delivery or company (or any combination) AT THE TIME OF Ordering. Mike Hutton will remind you of this for the next few occasions.

The order dates for 2015 (all by 9.00am on a Wednesday) are :-

14th January; 18th February; 18th March; 13th May; 15th July; 16th September; 14th October; 11th November and 2nd December.

As usual, reminders will be sent out before each date by e-mail to those registered and via the Minstead Parish Council weekly e-mail. Feel free to pass this information on to any oil users in Minstead, Lyndhurst, Bank, Bartley, Winsor and places nearby!

A STRATEGIC CYCLING NETWORK

Following last year’s petition in the Village and the discussion at the Annual Assembly in March, the Parish Council has prepared a proposal for a strategic cycling network in the New Forest so that both locals and visitors cyclists can cycle safely between major settlements, specifically Cadnam to Lymington via Lyndhurst and Brockenhurst.

COMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDERS NEEDED!

The Southern Central Ambulance service is in need of additional volunteers to become Community First Responders.

You will be trained to respond to and deal with serious medical situations and you would be providing a valuable contribution to your local community.

To find out more contact:

the local group coordinator Graham Reeve on 023 8028 2866 or

visit www.southerncentralambulance.nhs.uk

The sooner treatment starts the better it is for the patient and because community responders answer calls in their own neighbourhood they usually arrive on scene before the ambulance. These seconds and minutes save lives!

FIREWORKS

A recent private firework party resulted in a neighbour’s horse taking fright and injuring itself by running through a fence.

A thoughtful word of warning might have enabled the owner to put it in a stable and prevent this unnecessary accident.
